Variable selection in finite mixture of regression models using the skew-normal distribution

Variable selection in finite mixture of regression (FMR) models is frequently used in statistical modeling. The majority of applications of variable selection in FMR models use a normal distribution for regression error. Such assumptions are unsuitable for a set of data containing a group or groups of observations with asymmetric behavior. In this paper, we introduce a variable selection procedure for FMR models using the skew-normal distribution. With appropriate choice of the tuning parameters, we establish the theoretical properties of our procedure, including consistency in variable selection and the oracle property in estimation. To estimate the parameters of the model, a modified EM algorithm for numerical computations is developed. The methodology is illustrated through numerical experiments and a real data example.

Modelling selection for resistance to methods of insect pest control in combination

The development of resistance to insecticides is now widespread among insects. Other methods of pest control are also potentially at risk of encountering resistance. A modelling approach is presented here to evaluate the effects of combining methods of insect pest control on the selection for resistance to the control methods. This analysis is based on partitioning the total mortality acting on a population into its constituent components from all known sources, and these are related to selection for resistance. When two control methods are used in combination, selection for resistance against the two is a linear function if the two don't interact, otherwise it may be sublinear or supralinear. A specific example is presented using a model of the Olive fruit fly (Dacus oleae Gmel.) and employing food-baited and pheromone-baited traps for control. The control methods that appear least likely to encounter resistance are natural enemies and the use of pheromone traps for male annihilation. These should be integrated into a control program where possible to minimize the development of resistance to other control methods being used.

本文针对国产３００ＭＷ汽轮发电机冷却用单级轴流风扇的改型设计，分别对有后导叶和无导叶两种不同方案轴流风扇进行了理论研究及实验分析．对其在高压头、小流量的条件下使用作了性能上的比较，同时利用优化方法找出该风扇动叶的扭曲规律，并对叶轮直径、轮毂比等关键设计参数的选取进行了分析研究．

Statistical Issues in Fisheries' Stock Assessments*

Decisions concerning the management of fisheries are founded on confidence statements for interest parameters such as biomass and exploitation rate, derived from complex structural models that describe the dynamics of fisheries. We identify four generic statistical issues and focus on how they impact on the reliability of those confidence statements: (a) parameters for which the data have little or no information; (b) competing structural relationships; (c) weighting of observations; and (d) alternative methods for computing confidence statements. Our purpose is to give an exposition of how these issues impact on fisheries' analyses, with the intent of stimulating thought on more effective alternatives. We describe the fisheries' management context and use two specific studies to illustrate how these generic statistical issues impact on fisheries assessment results. It is demonstrated that these statistical issues can have a profound impact on fishery management decisions and that established approaches to handle them have not been fully developed.
