Services for disabled children: integrating the perspective of social workers

The paper addresses questions about the appropriate focus and direction of social work with disabled children, by triangulating parental views with those of social workers. Previous studies concerning services for disabled children have concentrated either on the views of parents or, less often, on those of service providers. This study adds to the picture by linking the two together and allowing service providers to comment on the views of service users. Parents of nine disabled children were inter-viewed following the introduction of a specialist disability team in an inner city borough, following the implementation of the Children Act 1989. The interviews took place over a 9-month period in 1995, and the comments of parents were then shared with social workers both from the borough concerned and from elsewhere. The parents' views reflect confusion about service provision, ignorance of their children's legal (as opposed to moral) rights, a preference for proactive service provision and the need for emotional as well as material support, the last framed variously as counselling, advice and someone to listen. There was little evidence that the Children Act, which could have facilitated improvements in all these areas, had made any discernible difference. Social workers' comments on these findings, with which they identified strongly, revealed a lack of confidence in their own abilities, a lack of clarity in their role and increasing disillusion with the services of their organizations. It is argued that in order to meet parents' expressed needs, service providers require a confident and fundamental shift in emphasis back to the role of social worker as provider as well as enabler.

Relationship Characteristics of Women in Interracial Same-Sex Relationships

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship characteristics of women in interracial same-sex relationships with respect to their current level of stress, internalized homophobia, perceived relationship equality, relationship satisfaction, and social support. Four groups were compared according to their current type of race relationship (ethnic minority women with White partners, White partners only, both ethnic minority partners, and White women with ethnic minority partners). No significant differences were found in terms of children and income; however, ethnic minority women with ethnic minority partners reported lower education attainment than the other groups. Relationally, there were no significant differences by race relationship for social support, relationship equality, relationship satisfaction, or stress. Internalized homophobia was lowest for interracial partnerships (ethnic minority paired with White partner). These findings are discussed in relationship to minority stress.     

Working parent friendly schools: the role of school instrumental support in work–family conflict

Instrumental support can foster or ameliorate parent experiences of work–family conflict. Based on theories relating social support to stress, a framework for considering how school support affects work–family conflict is proposed and tested. Parent experiences of instrumental support (school schedules, school service provision, and staff accessibility) and school demands on parents (volunteer and homework involvement) were investigated in relation to levels of work–family conflict. Work demands were related to both family-interference-with-work and work-interference-with family; family demands related only to time-based family-interference-with-work. Perceptions of school scheduling as supportive were related negatively to both time- and strain-based work-interference-with family, whereas perceptions of school transportation services were related to both time- and strain-based family-interference-with-work. No buffering effects of these types of support were found. Implications for how community organizations can play a role in ameliorating work–family conflict are discussed.

Why Lesbians Choose Therapy

Abstract

This study investigated factors which influence lesbians' use of psychotherapy services. Participants completed surveys assessing demographic variables and experiences and attitudes toward therapy. The sample comprised 247 participants recruited through lesbian/gay organizations. The sample was largely Caucasian, in their mid-thirties, highly educated, and self-identified feminists. Replicating previous research, 78 had been in therapy. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of issues taken to therapy, reasons for seeking therapy and reasons for not seeking therapy, and participants' beliefs about the limitations of the usefulness of therapy for lesbians are presented. Participants expressed concerns about lesbians seeking therapy from psychotherapists who are heterosexist, homophobic, or do not have training and experience working with lesbians.     

A modification of the partial sequential probability ratio test

For the problem of discriminating between two simple hypoth¬eses concerning a Koopman - Darmois parameter, a modification of the partial sequential probability ratio test is proposed where instead of drawing only one fixed sample, two fixed samples are drawn and then Wald's SPRT is started. The OC and the ASN func¬tions are derived. Numerical comparisons are made with Wald's and Read's procedures for testing the normal mean with known variance. For some parameter values, the test procedure has a lower ASN than that of Read's procedure.     

The uniformly most powerful unbiased tests involving the f-distribution

The uniformly most powerful unbiased test in exponential family situations involving the F-distrlbution is illustrated with examples. Its performance is compared with that of the more conventional equal-tails test. A FORTRAN program for computing the critical values and tail sizes of this test is also presented.
