Parameterizations and Fitting of Bi-directed Graph Models to Categorical Data

Abstract.  We discuss two parameterizations of models for marginal independencies for discrete distributions which are representable by bi-directed graph models, under the global Markov property. Such models are useful data analytic tools especially if used in combination with other graphical models. The first parameterization, in the saturated case, is also known as thenation multivariate logistic transformation, the second is a variant that allows, in some (but not all) cases, variation-independent parameters. An algorithm for maximum likelihood fitting is proposed, based on an extension of the Aitchison and Silvey method.     

Nonlinear Autoregression with Positive Innovations

Use of nonlinear models in analyzing time series data is becoming increasingly popular. This paper considers a broad class of nonlinear autoregressive models where the autoregressive part is additive and the terms are nonlinear functions of the past data. Also, the innovation distribution is supported on the non-negative reals and satisfies a tail regularity condition. The linear parameters of the autoregression are estimated using a linear programming recipe which yields much more accurate estimates than traditional methods such as conditional least squares. Limiting distribution of the linear programming estimators is obtained. Simulation studies validate the asymptotic results and reveal excellent small sample properties of the LPE estimator.

《唐诗三百首》的注本,从清朝乾隆年间到现在,实在难以计数。金性尧的《唐诗三百首新注》是近20多年来影响最大、流传最广的一种。《唐诗三百首全译》也较有影响。但各家注释中仍有不少错误。特别是近些年又出版了许多种新注本,辗转抄袭,以讹传讹。这里指出各家普遍存在的一些疏误,与各家商榷。     

Multiple Time Scales and the Lifetime Coefficient of Variation: Engineering Applications

We consider linear combinations of “natural” timescales and choose the “best” one which provides the minimum coefficient of variation of the lifetime. Our time scale is in fact a generalized Miner time scale because the latter is based on an appropriate weighting of the times spent on low and high level loadings. The suggested modus operandi for finding the“best” time scale has many features in common with the approach suggested by Farewell and Cox (1979) and Oakes (1995) which is devoted to multiple time scales in survival analysis. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

'Anything you can do, tu can do better': tu and vous as substitutes for indefinite on in French

Research on Montreal French (Laberge and Sankoff 1979; Thibault 1991) has shown a spectacular rise in the use of indefinite tu (or vous ) in recent decades, at the expense of the standard form on . Although grammars of French have traditionally passed over indefinite tu / vous in silence, Ashby's study of Tours French (1992) confirmed that the phenomenon exists in metropolitan French also. The historical time-depth of indefinite tu/ vous has apparently not been explored previously, though Posner (1997) has suggested that indefinite tu is a modern feature, found especially in Canada. A survey of indefinite tu / vous in earlier periods and in a range of varieties forms the first part of this paper. Secondly, drawing on a corpus of French spoken in Picardy, northern France, the paper investigates the extent to which this use of the 2nd person pronouns: (i) helps to avoid ambiguity; (ii) co-occurs with another grammatical variable. Unlike the surveys of Montreal and Tours, the Picardy corpus includes a large majority of informants who used tu to address the interviewer, and this too is explored as a potential influence on speakers' use of 2nd person pronouns with indefinite reference.
