The formation and outcomes of cohabiting and marital partnerships in early adulthood: the role of previous partnership experience

Summary.  We estimate a joint model of the formation and dissolution of cohabiting and marital unions among British women who were born in 1970. The focus of the analysis is the effect of previous cohabitation and marriage on subsequent partnership transitions. We use a multilevel simultaneous equations event history model to allow for residual correlation between the hazards of moving from an unpartnered state into cohabitation or marriage, converting a cohabiting union into marriage and dissolution of either form of union. A simultaneous modelling approach allows for the joint determination of these transitions, which may otherwise bias estimates of the effects of previous partnership outcomes on later transitions.     

A Note on the Inoperability Input-Output Model

In this note, we propose some comments and some extensions of the inoperability input-output model (IIOM), as recently proposed by Santos and Haimes (2004). In particular, we propose the use of some analytic tools capable of providing information on the reaction of sectors subsequent to a terrorist attack on infrastructure service sectors. These tools, namely, the field of influence and the multiplier product matrix, provide information on the way sectors react to a shock on the aggregate demand and/or to a (temporary or permanent) change of production function coefficients. Finally, using the 2003 65 sectors input-output matrix for the U.S. economy, a simple empirical example is presented.     

Semiparametric analysis of case series data

Summary.  The case series model for estimating the association between an age-dependent exposure and an outcome event requires information only on cases and implicitly adjusts for all age-independent multiplicative confounders, while allowing for an age-dependent base-line incidence. In the paper the model is presented in greater generality than hitherto, including more general discussion of its derivation, underlying assumptions, applicability, limitations and efficiency. A semiparametric version of the model is developed, in which the age-specific relative incidence is left unspecified. Modelling covariate effects and testing assumptions are discussed. The small sample performance of this model is studied in simulations. The methods are illustrated with several examples from epidemiology.

Measuring legislative collaboration: The Senate press events network

Scholarship regarding the causes and consequences of legislative collaboration has drawn several insights through the application of network analysis. Previously used measures of legislative relationships may be heavily driven by non-relational factors such as ideological or policy-area preferences. We introduce participation in joint press events held by U.S. Senators as records of collaboration and the networks they comprise. This measure captures intentional relationships between legislators along the full timeline of collaboration. We show that there is substantial community structure underlying press event networks that goes beyond political party affiliation, and that press event collaboration predicts overlap in roll call voting.

Regression analysis of panel count data with covariate-dependent observation and censoring times

Panel count data often occur in a long-term study where the primary end point is the time to a specific event and each subject may experience multiple recurrences of this event. Furthermore, suppose that it is not feasible to keep subjects under observation continuously and the numbers of recurrences for each subject are only recorded at several distinct time points over the study period. Moreover, the set of observation times may vary from subject to subject. In this paper, regression methods, which are derived under simple semiparametric models, are proposed for the analysis of such longitudinal count data. Especially, we consider the situation when both observation and censoring times may depend on covariates. The new procedures are illustrated with data from a well-known cancer study.
