Negotiating race in stand-up comedy: interpretations of ‘single story’ narratives

This paper explores how narratives of personal experiences among audience members in Midwestern comedy clubs shape their receptivity to the racial discourses deployed by stand-up comedians. Conducting a Midwest-based ethnography of comedy clubs located across three states, I collected data through a variety of methods, which included: live stand-up performance observations; interviews of comedians and audience members from the same shows to better situate their respective strategies and reactions; and audience surveys. My analysis reveals how the subtlety and art of stand-up performance styles combine with the pleasurable medium of humor to alternately reinscribe, challenge, or proudly celebrate audience understandings of race. The accounts shared by comedians and audience members at these clubs demonstrate the potential for stereotype humor – contingent on presentation styles and audience experiences – to foster ethnic solidarity or complicate racial-behavioral associations through repeated encounters with comedians who either indirectly challenge or actively critique familiar types.     

Reflection note: confessions of a Muslim researcher – considering identity in research

ABSTRACT

This research note explores some of the contentions that have emerged from Muslim-on-Muslim research and how this can implicate the researcher more personally. Speaking in the context of methodological concerns arising from qualitative research, the paper consider the following aspects: inappropriate access of participants, over-representation of own experiences, and questioning fundamental parts of your identity. Whilst certain experiences can shake the foundations of being a researcher and even sense of self, these should ultimately be welcomed. It is concluded that, in taking the time to reconcile from such tensions emerging from our multiple identities, it can allow for becoming a more rigorous and reflexive researcher.     

Confidence and the effectiveness of creative methods in qualitative interviews with adults

ABSTRACT

This paper examines two contrasting creative methods; a drawing task and a LEGO building task used in a study exploring the gap between policy and practice in widening participation to higher education across two different types of university in England. These creative methods were used within 16 semi-structured interviews in seven universities to attempt to explore deeper understandings of everyday policy and what they mean in practice and to make comparisons across types of institutions. This paper examines the role that creative confidence played in the effectiveness of both methods through exploring the successes and failures of each arguing that understanding these barriers can improve the successful use of these methods, especially with adults. When these barriers are overcome, the paper also demonstrates how creative methods encouraged more reflective discussion of everyday issues, increased levels of rapport, and shared engagement in the interview process.     

“Beating the Bad Rap:” A Qualitative Study of Social Studies Educators Using Film

Abstract

The film-based practices of four social studies teachers were examined using a qualitative methodology. The research interviewed teachers twice over a 2-month period, collected handouts, and collected audio-recorded teacher logs. Three of the teachers taught social studies primarily, while a fourth teacher was responsible for both English and social studies content. The findings indicate that teachers used film in addition to a wide range of other visual practices. Teachers used film actively rather than passively to facilitate dialogic connections, as well as elicit thinking about their content areas.

随着农民工数量的增多和国家对农民工问题重视程度的提高,国产电影逐渐把镜头对准了农民工群体。新世纪以来,国产电影对农民工的书写,主要从农民工的生存状况、心理状况、精神世界和价值追求等四个方面展开,塑造了一群性格各异的农民工形象。但也存在一些问题,需要在今后的电影创作中逐步去解决。

艾耶尔在《二十世纪哲学》一书中批评了普特南的思想，认为其节外生枝地谈论本质、必然或可能世界是得不偿失的。普特南对艾耶尔的批评进行了回应与反思，对比了物理的可能性和形而上学的可能性，在对形而上学可能性等模态问题进行辩护的基础上，极富启发性地讨论了分层等同、实体等同等重要问题。

Internal and External Stress Factors Associated with the Identity Development of Transgendered Youth

Abstract

The goal of this paper is to present an alternative to a traditionally-held view that transgendered youth suffer from some sort of disorder, and instead shed light on the internal and external stress factors that may lead the young person to seek help. Social service professionals need to be aware of such factors in order to make a full assessment of what a potential transgendered adolescent client's issues are, and in order to work at changing some of these external pressures societally so that more transgendered youth can attain peaceful identity integration.
