“小组合作课堂展示”在大学英语教学中的实践与反思

本研究将小组合作课堂展示（group presentation）创造性地引入大学英语课堂教学,在一年半的实践中,逐步构建了“以学生为中心”的大学英语课堂,实现了有效教学。通过实践过程中的观察、问卷调查以及学生的反思性评价,笔者发现这种教学形式能够：（1）促使学生综合运用各种技能,提高学生的英语综合能力;（2）激发学生的英语学习兴趣,增强学习自主性和自信心;（3）增强团队合作意识,改善大学生的人际关系;（4）实现师生角色互动,建立良好的师生关系。

真实与建构:人类学纪录片的困惑

对于影视人类学家来说，在影像记录方面，摄制人员在题材和田野点的选择上，甚至在影片的后期制作上，应该接受人类学家的指导和帮助，在追求影片的美学价值时，一定不要放弃对真实的探究，才能做到以镜头存录当下国家的档案。同时，文化不仅只是记录，还需要传播，既客观真实又好看可观的人类学影视片，无疑是传播的好媒介。一部好的人类学影视片一定是科学与艺术完美的结合，是人类学家与影视学家协作的结晶。好的人类学影视片不仅有史料和文献价值，它还应该具有传播价值。在艺术价值得到充分尊重的基础上，让影片真实更接近真相的本质，这是人类学纪录片的追求。     

Seeing (in)security,gender and silencing: posters in and about the British women’s suffrage movement

Feminist Security Studies focuses on expanding the referent object to individuals and non-state collectives, looking beyond the military sector to include questions of identity, and uncovering (in)security in unexpected places. An important part of this debate concerns silence, particularly how certain individuals are silenced and how this might be challenged through images. This article looks at the ways images can be used to make gender-specific security problems visible. It holds that text, images and practices interact to construct (in)security and outlines a tripartite text-image-practice model for analyzing these interactions. Through a case study of the British women’s suffrage movement it illustrates the potential of the text-image-practice model. The suffrage movement leveraged visuals, militancy and practices like hunger-striking to resist attempted silencing by the government across textual, verbal and visual planes. Using this case, it shows how posters were used to try to silence Suffragettes and how Suffragettes resisted silencing. Thus, it demonstrates that images are important sites of feminist resistance and security politics that can communicate a politics of the body. The article also offers an illustration of how historical cases of gender insecurity and resistance as well as their visualization can be brought into Feminist Security Studies.     

Art in my world: Exploring the visual art experiences in the everyday lives of young children and their impact on cultural capital

This paper presents data from a unique longitudinal study exploring the visual art experiences of nine children in two Scottish primary schools. Using a theoretical lens of cultural capital, the study is focused on spaces where children experience visual art and the value of these experiences, using arts-informed, visual methods. While each child presented a particular insight, the findings question the value of current school visual art experience over other spaces. The findings also demonstrate the capacity of children to resist the control of cultural capital by adults, engaging with visual art on their own terms.     

Using creative methods to research across difference. An introduction to the special issue

ABSTRACT

This special issue explores some of the methodological challenges that are brought into play when scholars deploy creative methods to research across difference. This introductory article defines what we mean by ‘creative methods’ and discusses some of the strengths and weaknesses of using this approach within social science research. It then outlines how creative methods can be used to research across difference, specifically, and introduces the seven articles that make up the special issue.     

Repositioning the research encounter: exploring power dynamics and positionality in youth research

Childhood and youth studies have seen the development of a range of innovative research methods over the past two decades. However, many studies have focused on the ideals of empowerment and ‘giving voice’ rather than developing understandings of the nuanced and complex experiences of children and youth. This paper argues that the development of an insightful sociology of childhood and youth necessitates an understanding of complex, fluid, and often political, processes of youth experience. It argues that the use of research methods characterized by a variety of power dynamics can generate situated knowledges of youth experience. Ongoing reflexive analysis of researcher and participant positionality in research encounters is posited as affording insightful and in-depth research perspectives. This is illustrated through discussion of qualitative research carried out with Muslim teens in the west of Ireland which involved the use of focus groups, visual narratives and an online blog site.
