News media and the Muslim identity after the Christchurch mosque massacres

ABSTRACT

This article discusses news about Muslims via one researcher’s social media news feeds after the Christchurch tragedy. Using intercultural and Islamic communication theories, the contents of several news stories are analysed for their contribution to the Muslim person’s identity. Findings reveal four main categories: Muslim women and hijab; religion and terrorism; media, government, democracy and the politics of oppression; and representation of the Muslim voice. Substantial news content also depicts peace, love and forgiveness in its presentation of the human angle in New Zealand media. There is a significant shift from the negative othering rhetoric of international media to an inclusive national approach in the tone of the New Zealand press. However, Muslim narratives reveal that structural discrimination and systemic oppression do exist and pose safety and identity challenges. While news continues to divide and unite people depending on the press agenda, their depictions of Islam and Muslims have potentially major influences and serious consequences on the Muslim person’s identity within the local and global Muslim communities.     

The Demise of White Revolution: What's Next for Billy Roper?

In August 2011, Billy Roper, white nationalist leader and political candidate from Arkansas, dismantled White Revolution, the Internet web site that he founded in 2002. At the time of its closing, the site posted a membership of over 1000. In 2010, Roper ran for governor of Arkansas and began mobilizing a political party called the Nationalist Party of America. He had intentions of running for President as the party's nominee in 2012. Much of the promotion and fund-raising for his campaign was going to be conducted through the White Revolution online site. Roper subsequently dropped out of the race and discontinued organizing the nationalist political party. In an interesting turn, he has aligned with Pastor Thom Robb's Knights Party (a Christian Identity Klan group) located in Zinc, Arkansas, a rural Ozarks community. Roper's decision to renounce his former status as an agnostic neo-Nazi for Knight status in Robb's Klan group is an indication of subtle shifts occurring in the broader American white supremacist movement that include the convergence of ideologies that were once very different but now appear to be morphing into a new hybrid form.

亚里士多德实体理论的意义和缺陷探析

亚里士多德的实体理论将存在的范畴分为十类,其中实体是独立和核心范畴,其余范畴是依存和次要范畴。实体与其他范畴是被依存与依存、被表述与表述的关系。亚里士多德的实体理论在学理上至少有两个重大意义:正名并创立逻辑学;表明人们不能在认识关系之外来认识和把握世界,存在与思维同一。通过举例分析,认为“白马非马”是诡辩。亚里士多德实体理论的最大缺陷是关于第一实体和第二实体的划分,以及对一般与个别及其关系的看法的矛盾和混乱。一般与个别作为实体并无第一第二之分;在存在论上,一般与个别都既是客观实在又是概念;在认识论上,一般与个别都是认识的起点。     

Behaviour of the length test for medium sample sizes

In this note it is shown that even for relatively large sample sites the asymptotic distribution of the smoothed length as derived in Reschenhofer and Bomse (1991) should not be used for the determination of critical values. Therefore extended tables of critical values for both the 1% and 5% levels of significance generated by simulation are presented.

从《山海经》等早期文学典籍到唐传奇和明清小说中的白猿形象,经历了从单纯的珍奇动物到淫邪好色的猿精、修道练气的灵猿的演变,最终定型为看守和传授天书的仙猿角色。促成这一演变过程的主要原因,一是天书和白猿皆与道教有关;二是白猿本身所具有的诸多有利因素;三是古代的白色动物崇拜。在白猿传书模式的背后,是白猿形象逐渐＂社会化＂的过程。     

Managing White‐Collar Work: An Operations‐Oriented Survey

Although white‐collar work is of vast importance to the economy, the operations management (OM) literature has focused largely on traditional blue‐collar work. In an effort to stimulate more OM research into the design, control, and management of white‐collar work systems, this paper provides a systematic review of disparate streams of research relevant to understanding white‐collar work from an operations perspective. Our review classifies research according to its relevance to white‐collar work at individual, team, and organizational levels. By examining the literature in the context of this framework, we identify gaps in our understanding of white‐collar work that suggest promising research directions.
