Making more of alliance portfolios: The role of alliance portfolio coordination

Alliance portfolios enable firms to access and integrate multiple resources from different, simultaneous partners. We assess the extent to which alliance portfolio coordination benefits focal firms along three alliance portfolio characteristics: alliance portfolio size, the complementarity of the resources available through the portfolio, and the degree to which relation-specific investments are made across the portfolio. Based on a questionnaire completed by 444 Dutch companies, we found that the three portfolio characteristics play an important role in creating benefits for focal firms through their portfolios. Additionally, our findings suggest that alliance portfolio coordination is an important element in dealing with the challenge of managing portfolios, in that it shapes the effect of the other portfolio characteristics.

Multiplexity and strategic alliances: The relational embeddedness of coalitions in social movement organisational fields

While scholars have embraced the notion of social movements as networks, there has been little empirical exploration of the emergence of coalitions within these multilayered systems. Here I explore the role of overlapping relations in alliance formation amongst a group of 55 health-related professional social movement organisations mobilised against austerity. Using cross-sectional bivariate exponential random graph models, I find dependencies between digital proxies for alliance, shared allies, information exchange, positive nomination and offline colobbying activity at the dyadic, degree and triadic levels. Cross-network associations indicate that multiplexity plays a non-trivial role in the formation of alliances and, more generally, social movement organisational fields, necessitating increased attention from scholars of social movements.     

Mentoring to Achieve Diversity in Graduate Programs

The discipline of statistics has a celebrated, diverse, and colorful past. With a definite international flavor, we continue to make great strides in keeping our discipline relevant and accessible for addressing significant societal concerns. Unfortunately, we lag behind many other disciplines when it comes to fully tapping into the potential of all demographic groups within the United States. Mentoring provides one of many opportunities to change this narrative. This article looks at hard numbers related to diversity, points to some existing successful mentoring programs, and is a reflection of lessons learned through personal experiences.

英日同盟是20世纪初英日两国为了与其它列强在远东进行竞争而结成的帝国主义政治军事同盟,其主要目的是维护和促进各自的在华侵略利益。英日同盟条约先后经过了两次修订,反映了英日两国与俄、美、德等国在中国问题上的复杂关系。可以说,英日同盟存在的二十年是列强按照实力逻辑进行一系列博弈的“丛林时期”。

对藏族传教是宣道会在近代西北传教的重要内容。宣道会对西北藏族传教地理格局经历了由大于号形到带形的演变,从1934年起出现不断萎缩的趋势。本文主要依据宣道会的档案资料,分析上述大于号形传教地理格局的形成、演变及其原因,认为民族团结是民族地区预防和抵御外国宗教势力渗透的一项不可或缺的工作。     

朝鲜独立同盟及朝鲜义勇军历史的几个问题

华北地区朝鲜革命青年建立的朝鲜独立同盟及朝鲜义勇军为中国抗战和朝鲜的独立而英勇奋战,要正确地理解它的历史,必须澄清朝鲜独立同盟的领导人、同盟的性质及任务、同盟的双重任务,同时还要认真区分在中国关内地区活动的两个朝鲜人的反日组织。     

新中国成立以来的中俄关系

自中华人民共和国成立至今,中苏、中俄关系的发展经历了三个阶段:从建立同盟到武装敌对、实现关系正常化、逐步建立和发展战略协作伙伴关系.六十年的坎坷促使中俄关系由情绪化而走向务实和理性化.两国紧密围绕相互间的主要矛盾,优先关注和解决历史遗留的边界问题.为促进双边关系的发展.两国政府做出了不懈的努力,成效显著.在国际政治中,中俄加强协作的动力是合作应对美国单极霸权.展望未来,中俄两国将探索提高战略协作水平的新方式;以经济合作为重点,不断充实伙伴关系的内容;加强文化交流,克服不利因素,深化长远合作的各项基础.     

Random alliance networks

The morphological properties of kinship and marriage alliance networks, such as circuits, are typically considered as indicators of sociological phenomena — yet, they may also be partly coincidental. To assert the contribution of chance to these morphological features, we develop a standardized method where empirical alliance networks are compared with a random baseline. We apply our framework to a variety of empirical cases and show that some corpuses are remarkably well reconstructed by our random model, while others still feature significant divergencies which may be partly connected to field-based experience. On the whole, our approach may be used to scrutinize the matrimonial role of social groups as asserted by native or ethnological theory.     

赛(金花)瓦(德西)公案辩正

近现代关于赛金花的传闻非常多,特别是她与八国联军统帅瓦德西的关系,大体上存在着三种相互矛盾的说法。根据丁士源的《梅楞章京笔记》、瓦德西的《拳乱笔记》等诸多历史文献的相关记载,可以断定赛、瓦二人并无发生艳情之可能性,其事乃出于赛本人的编造,加上当时新闻传媒的炒作以及文艺作品的虚构,因此不具有历史真实性。同时,赛金花以卑贱之身劝阻联军暴行的传说故事虽非史事,但也反映了当时民众对满清政府的嘲讽态度。抗战期间夏衍等编演《赛金花》话剧,是从积极方面发挥了赛金花故事的社会意义。
