American v. National Football League: Using public relations to “win” a war against a monopoly

No professional sports group ever achieved acceptance as widespread within a single decade's span as the American Football League (AFL). This study chronicles how the AFL used public relations strategies and tactics to garner public acceptance, which in turn helped convince the older National Football League (NFL) to merge with the upstart league. This study will further the understanding of how trade associations use public relations as an image-building device, as well as address a deficiency in the study of sports public relations.     

老年人脑腔隙梗死与胰岛素抵抗关系的临床研究

目的探讨老年人脑腔隙梗死(腔梗)与胰岛素抵抗(IR)的关系。方法对354例受试者行空腹血糖(FPG)、甘油三脂(TG)、总胆固醇(TC)、高密度脂蛋白胆固醇(HDL-C)、低密度脂蛋白胆固醇(LDL-C)检测。采用放免法测定空腹胰岛素(FIN)。评估机体胰岛素抵抗(HOMA-IR),并计算其体重指数(BMI)。将腔梗组按无、有高血压及高 TG/低 HDL 分为Ⅰ、Ⅱ两组。结果腔梗组与健康对照组比较 TG,TC、LDL、FIG、FIN、HOMA-IR 有非常显著差异(P<0.01)。在校正年龄、性别、BMI 后老年人腔梗仍有显著的 IR,且不受高血压和高 TG 的影响。结论老年人腔梗较健康老人有明显的 IR。高 TG、高 LDL、IR 是影响老年人腔梗的可能是独立的危险因素,老年人腔梗与 IR 关系密切,呈正相关。

Delimiting perceptual cues used for the ethnic labeling of African American and European American voices

A review of speech identification studies examining the abilities of listeners to distinguish African American and European American voices shows that Americans can recognize many African American voices with a high degree of accuracy even in the absence of stereotypical morphosyntactic and lexical features. Experiments to determine what cues listeners use to distinguish ethnicity have not yielded such consistent results, perhaps suggesting that listeners may access a wide variety of cues if necessary. An experiment involving African Americans with features of a European American vernacular demonstrated that African Americans with atypical features are difficult for listeners to identify. Analysis suggested that vowel quality and intonation could have misled respondents but did not rule out timing and voice quality as factors in identification.

解析美国南方的困境--论威廉·福克纳《喧哗与骚动》中的"焦虑"主题

作为现代美国文学的一个代表人物,威廉·福克纳从一个特别的角度来探讨有关人之生存的种种问题。本文着力探讨的是在福克纳创造的一块"邮票般大小的土地"上,美国南方人所面临的困境。从表面上看,问题的产生是由于"传统世界"的消失,而从更深的层次看,原因在于"传统世界"还继续存在着———存在于南方人的灵魂和血脉里,使他们身处现代社会却不能接受现代社会,也不能为现代社会所接受。结果,这些过去与现在的冲突,内心理想与外在现实的冲突深刻地影响了南方人物的命运,并导致无所不在的焦虑:道德焦虑、时间焦虑和生存焦虑。     

'Du hast jar keene Ahnung': African American English dubbed into German

This paper explores the translation of sociolinguistic variation by examining the ways that African American English (AAE) is dubbed into German. In discussing this ubiquitous yet poorly studied area of language use, I show that ideas about language as an index to social groupings are transferable to the degree that the ideas overlap in the cultures in question. In the case of German, if the character being dubbed is young, male and tied to the street cultures of the urban inner city, then AAE is dubbed using a form of German that has links to the urban youth cultures of north‐central Germany. The transferability of sociolinguistic variation is important to issues related to cross‐cultural communication and the ideologies that may play a role in the outcomes of that communication as well as to linguistic creativity and language style more generally.
