Migration in market and democracy transition: Migration intentions and behavior in Romania

This paper analyzes the determinants of migration decision-making in the context of recent market and democratic transition in Romania. Using early 1990s internal migration survey, census and population register data, the results from Lisrel path models show that market and democracy value orientation variables are significant determinants of intentions to move, controlling for individual and regional social structural and resource indicators. Similarly, district-level out-migration behavior is directly determined by the political profile of the local area. Results from the total and disaggregated rural and urban models are interpreted through a reform values and characteristics typology of migrants. At least in the early stages of Romanian transition, the results indicate that migration choice behavior is governed by a search for places with greatest opportunities in terms of market and democracy returns. Implications of the results for political system and public policy decision are discussed.

中国地域文化的核心部分,是作为地域人群"集体潜意识"的地域"隐性文化".因此,注目"潜意识"问题研究且成果颇丰的弗洛伊德精神分析学派的相关方法,在中国地域文化研究中便大有用武之地.其中,弗洛伊德的高足荣格的"集体潜意识"理论,对中国地域文化研究提供了心理学依据;克鲁克洪的"隐性文化"理论在被接纳入唯物史观框架后,也是研究中的有力工具.     

The Hausdorff Space and Applied Statistics: A View from the U.S.S.R.

The article focuses on the debate in the pages of the Soviet statistical journal Vestnik Statistiki as to the existence and relevance of applied statistics as a separate scientific discipline. The contents of four letters to the editor and relevant editorial comments that appeared in this journal between October 1985 and July 1987 are analyzed.

Statistical Mentoring at Early Training and Career Stages

At Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), statistical scientists develop solutions for a variety of national security challenges through scientific excellence, typically as members of interdisciplinary teams. At LANL, mentoring is actively encouraged and practiced to develop statistical skills and positive career-building behaviors. Mentoring activities targeted at different career phases from student to junior staff are an important catalyst for both short and long term career development. This article discusses mentoring strategies for undergraduate and graduate students through internships as well as for postdoctoral research associates and junior staff. Topics addressed include project selection, progress, and outcome; intellectual and social activities that complement the student internship experience; key skills/knowledge not typically obtained in academic training; and the impact of such internships on students’ careers. Experiences and strategies from a number of successful mentorships are presented. Feedback from former mentees obtained via a questionnaire is incorporated. These responses address some of the benefits the respondents received from mentoring, helpful contributions and advice from their mentors, key skills learned, and how mentoring impacted their later careers.

20世纪初的中国女界新文体,是在"文界革命"的社会背景下,在梁启超"新文体"主张与书写实践的示范下,随着妇女解放运动的展开而自成其体的.以女界革命的文思入文,使之产生特有的应用魔力;从妇女解放运动的实际需要出发,打破古旧作文陈规,随心开放文体,使之收获了中国文学史上空前的女子大手笔和难得一见的美文;采用与女子亲合的语言表述方式,使之对妇女大群"别有一种魔力".女界新文体俨然成为一座通达女子现代新文学书写的"魔力"之桥,它不仅作用于辛亥革命时期的民族/国家/妇女解放运动,也为"五四"时期、乃至以后的现代女性书写发展奠定了有力基础.
