Discrimination in child protection work: recurring themes in work with Asian families

When the relationships within the institutions and social practices of a society cannot be explained by the intentions, good or bad, of individual men and women, they can be described as structural ( Weedon 1987 , p. 3). This paper reports on research in a Midlands Social Services Department which examined child protection practice in relation to Asian families who had attended case conferences. The research shows that in spite of the good intentions of many individual workers, Asian families experienced a discriminatory service. Discriminatory policies and practices were perpetuated at an organizational level. Three themes from the research are explored: the use of interpreters, the accommodation of children, and the lack of attention to the mental and physical health of the child's mother and father. Each theme is explored to highlight the issues which Asian families faced and the problems which created barriers to good practice.

A Nonstationary Statistical Model for Computationally Intensive Numerical Ordinary Differential Systems

ABSTRACT

Computer models depending on unknown inputs are used in computer experiments in order to study the input-output relationship. Some computer models are computationally intensive and only a few computer runs can be made. A nonstationary statistical model that is used as a faster-running surrogate for computationally intensive numerical solvers of ordinary differential systems is proposed in this article. This statistical model reflects the dynamics of the system and, as a population dynamics example will show, it can be more accurate than a commonly used black box statistical model.     

Black Teenage Mothers' Understandings of the Effects of Maltreatment on their Coping Style and Parenting Practice: A Pilot Study

This article discusses a qualitative pilot study conducted with Black teenage mothers affected by maltreatment histories, exploring the feasibility of researching how they develop insights into the effects on their parenting skills. The results indicate key impact areas, including their relationships with their carers, perceptions of significant relationships and increased vulnerability to relationship abuse. As the young mothers resisted seeing themselves as victims and utilised an avoidance‐centred coping strategy, their ability to recognise the impact of harmful childhood experiences was limited. The article concludes with reflections on the pilot study's implications and limitations.     

“Anything That Gets Me in My Heart”: Pat Parker's Poetry of Justice

This article argues that love and justice are interlocking themes that undergird and motivate the poetry and activism of the Black lesbian feminist Pat Parker. Parker was a prolific working-class poet, a committed Black lesbian feminist, and an international trailblazer whose poems, like her famous “Womanslaughter” discussed in this article, document the many injustices that Black women endured in an anti-Black, rabidly homophobic, and patriarchal U.S. during the last decades of the twentieth century. In a political moment where righteous cries of #BlackLivesMatter are heard across the United States I use this article to remind us all of the historical importance that Black lesbians played and continue to play in the struggles of anti-racist justice in America.     

Reframing Black Social Work Students' Experiences of Teaching and Learning

This article draws on critical race theory (CRT) to foreground the role of race and racism in the ways in which Black students experience social work teaching and learning. It reviews some of the available literature on Black social work students' experiences of teaching and learning. The article reframes understandings of the perceived failures of this group of students to adapt to the world of higher education. It is argued that race and racism are salient determining factors in the experiences of Black students within social work education. Emphasis is placed on understanding the specificity of this group of students taking into cognisance the social, cultural, economic, and political contexts within which they are located. The article uses CRT as critical lens to reflect on peer support groups as potential counter spaces that can disrupt the negative experiences of black social work students.     

Framing the experiences of BME social work students within a narrative of Educating for a Culturally Diverse Workforce

The Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) has noted that a higher percentage of black and minority ethnic (BME) students fail or take longer to complete their social work degrees, compared with the white majority student population. In response to this and related evidence, a national study was carried out in 2013 to explore this phenomenon and ways to support BME students in social work education in Scotland. BME students from five Scottish universities were interviewed, along with lecturers from six Scottish Universities, and practice educators from around Scotland. The background to the study is discussed and a review of the literature on race, whiteness, diversity and a strengths-based perspective is provided. The methodology of the study is explained, followed by a presentation of some of the key findings covering the themes of cultural difference, discrimination and valuing student strengths. To prepare social work students to practice in a culturally diverse and culturally aware workforce the paper argues for framing of social work education within a strengths-based perspective, of valuing diversity and other knowledges and for this approach to be embedded within a critique of both race and whiteness.
