Stigma, HIV/AIDS and prevention of mother-to-child transmission in Zambia

This report evaluates the extent of perceived and enacted HIV/AIDS-related stigma in a rural setting in Zambia. Stigmatisation is abundant, ranging from subtle actions to the most extreme degradation, rejection and abandonment. Women with HIV and pregnant women assumed to be HIV positive are repeatedly subjected to extensive forms of stigma, particularly once they become sick or if their child dies. Despite increasing access to prevention of mother to child transmission initiatives, including anti-retroviral drugs, the perceived disincentives of HIV testing, particularly for women, largely outweigh the potential gains from available treatments. HIV/AIDS related stigma drives the epidemic underground and is one of the main reasons that people do not wish to know their HIV status. Unless efforts to reduce stigma are, as one peer educator put it, “written in large letters in any HIV/AIDS campaign rather than small”, stigma will remain a major barrier to curbing the HIV/AIDS pandemic.     

Civil Society and Democracy: The Israeli Experience

Civil society has been considered pivotal to democracy, but the causes of its performance have remained controversial. According to one view the political context is a critical factor in shaping the contours of civil society. Another suggests that whether democracy prevails is contingent on society itself and the associations comprising it. In a test of these views it was assumed that if society prevails associations would vary by type. If the state is more important, then associations would be expected to score similarly on the democratic scale. It was also expected that variation among the types of performance would cut across group categories, reflecting general attributes of the polity. Data were derived from a survey conducted among voluntary associations in Israel (n = 360). Findings showed that (a) associations scored similarly on the democratic scale, (b) the scores for the democratic performance were not influenced by group category, and (c) the least performed function was integration.     

林长民与五四运动--兼论五四运动的起源

五四运动爆发之前 ,在国内各派政治势力围绕着“铁路统一案”与“山东问题”的斗争中 ,林长民起了很大的作用。他先是致力于铁路统一案之提出与实施 ,继而力主把青岛问题与胶济铁路及其延长线济顺、高徐两路联系起来 ,之后又运动拒签和反对与日直接交涉。从整个过程来看 ,林长民与五四运动之发生、发展关系密切。从中也可以看出 ,五四运动虽因外交问题而起 ,但其中杂有许多内政的因素。五四运动既是社会变动和文化变化的结果 ,也是当时各派政治势力分化互动的结果     

试论权利的演变及其成本——基于政府实现公共利益能力的视角

无论从任何角度考察，权利都以政府的巨大财政成本作为后盾，否则权利便无从实现。当现代政府的公共利益责任与权利成本发生矛盾时，如何协调二者之间的关系，将权利成本最小化、公共利益最大化，就成为理论界与实务界必须承担的责任。     

人大代表对公民意识的影响

民主政治与公民意识关联互动,在这种互动中,精英分子有着重要的影响。在人民代表大会制度中,人大代表理应是民主政治的精英分子,他们的意识和行为对公民意识的影响不容忽视,因此要提高人大代表的素质,强化这种影响。     

土木工程类复合型执业人才培养的研究与实践

根据复合型执业人才培养模式的要求,对土木工程专业理论课程教学内容进行合并、增删、优化组合;在实践教学环节方面,安排大四学生在施工现场实践近1年,由项目经理、工程监理和发包方驻地工程师进行综合指导。理论与实践紧密结合的复合型执业人才培养的改革实践获得了极好的效果。     

于激变中求稳实之法——民国最高法院关于女子财产继承权的解释例研究

对于国民党二大《妇女运动决议案》中“女子有财产继承权”的规定,民国最高法院采取了折中的立场进行限制性解释。其所面临的两难情形揭示出了法律制度的悖论。为在动荡中达到均衡,于激变中求得稳实之法,法律职能部门应在实践中发挥调整器的作用。     

“五四”后期周建人的婚恋观——以《妇女杂志》为考察依据

周建人在五四后期在恋爱、婚姻、离婚问题上更多地注重个体的自由、价值和觉醒。他认为，真诚的恋爱本是人生的花，是精神的高尚产品；理想的配偶选择应以个人本身性质上的各种美德为标准：以爱情的有无为婚姻离合的原则。婚恋的个人自由和独立有利于种族的完善、国家的进步，也是妇女解放和冲破家族制度的重要手段。因此，其婚恋观的一个重要诉求是男女平等，呈现出对妇女解放各个问题理性而具体的思考。     

刘少奇与大跃进

刘少奇积极参与了“大跃进”运动的决策与推动 ,除了在当时发明“公社”这一用词外 ,他还曾大力提倡大炼钢铁与供给制。随着“大跃进”危害日益明显 ,从 196 1年开始 ,刘少奇对“大跃进”的错误有所纠正。与当时的大多数中共领导人一样 ,他对“大跃进”的错误也有一个认识过程     

也论"五四"的主题

“五四”的主题是政治挤压下的启蒙。“五四”整个发展过程中启蒙始终不能完全脱离政治。“五四”落潮,并不是“救亡压倒启蒙”,而是启蒙自身发展和实现现代民族国家必然的客观要求。“五四”启蒙运动是不彻底的,这有其发展的历史性和客观性。因此不能脱离政治孤立地看待启蒙。
