Racial and Ethnic Diversity in Senior Centers: Comparing Participant Characteristics in More and Less Multicultural Settings

The 2008 Health Indicators Project surveyed a probability sample (N = 1,870) of New York City senior center participants. Attendees of racially and ethnically diverse and nondiverse senior centers were compared across 5 domains: demographics; health and quality of life; social support networks; neighborhood perceptions and engagement; health service access/utilization. Although homogeneous and diverse center participants demonstrate similar health and quality-of-life outcomes, those from diverse centers demonstrate greater risk of social isolation, receive less family support, and more likely seek medical care from hospitals or community clinics. Implications and future directions for research, practice and policy are discussed.     

For the Health of it: A Case Study of Staff Health Education

The authors conducted a 10-year follow-up study using a telephone survey to investigate the availability of emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs) at college health centers in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States. They also examined related issues, such as distribution procedure, existence of a written protocol, personnel involved, contraindications, follow-up procedures, methods of advertising, staff attitudes, changes in distribution over the past 10 years, and availability if ECPs become over-the-counter. Of the 119 completed responses, 58 schools (49%) reported distributing ECPs. The most common reasons schools listed for not distributing ECPs (n = 61, 51%) were religious convictions, understaffing, and lack of funding. Major changes in ECP distribution over the past 10 years related primarily to the number of schools distributing ECPs, protocol in ECP distribution, and advertising for ECP services.

乡镇卫生院服务能力建设的实证分析——以江苏省连云港市为例

目的：调查了解乡镇卫生院的能力建设情况,为促进新医改的落实提出建议。方法：以江苏连云港市为案例,采用文献检索、定量调查和定性访谈收集资料,资料分析以描述性为主。结果：区域卫生资源配置不均衡．向县级以上卫生机构集中：卫生院服务能力逐年提高,以粗放型增长为主：卫生技术人员整体素质不高．结构呈现优化趋势：公共卫生服务得到加强,医疗服务量增长迅速,“重医轻防”问题突出。结论：建议政府在区域卫生规划中,卫生资源向农村基层倾斜;卫生院应提高管理水平．走集约型发展的道路：相关部门积极制定和落实卫生人才设置规划,以灌南县为例,建立卫生人才中心;政府加大投入,加强绩效考核,促进卫生院重视公共卫生和基本医疗服务。     

Youth engagement and service dosage in a mandated setting: A study of residential treatment centers

Treatment theory in residential treatment centers (RTCs) is conceived as a two-stage process of first engaging the client and then delivering services or interventions aimed at presenting problems. This treatment logic has been criticized for “creaming clients” or reserving services for clients easier to engage or more amenable to treatment but less in need. The present study examines whether higher early levels of engagement by youth in RTCs leads to more intervention and compares the relative effects of engagement and seriousness of presenting problems on the quantity of services provided by the mid-point in the adolescents' stay. Data come from interviews with a clinical sample of 71 male and 59 female adolescents in two RTCs in an eastern state. Findings indicate that higher level of engagement predicts more treatment interventions. Treatment staff delivered higher dosages of services to youth with more current behavioral problems, not those with problematic behaviors at intake. Youth with positive peer group backgrounds also received more services. Findings extend knowledge of how treatment staff provide treatment to clients and the role engagement plays in RTC service delivery.     

“八神”祭祀的国家宗教中心及民间承续简

以“用事延年”为主旨的齐地“八神”祭祀与方仙信仰紧密联系,具有浓重的民间性、地域性特点。秦及西汉时期方仙思想兴盛,“八神”祭祀逐渐发展为国家宗教祭祀的中心。东汉以后,随着儒教地位的逐步提高和佛教的渐趋传入,方仙信仰日渐衰落,“八神”祭祀逐渐远离历史舞台。但依然有民间祭祀的承续,孔望山杯盘刻石即是其祭祀遗迹的历史实物。
