《宋诗选注》对喻论

修辞学的辞格界定 ,向来趋于单一 ,而且忽略学术著作的文本。钱钟书的《宋诗选注》饮誉几近半个世纪 ,问津于其修辞手法者 ,却寂然无闻。他把强调事物的“对比”,“嫁接”到鲜活的比喻上 ,不仅丰富了修辞的方式 ,而且拓展了文学评论的“语言空间”,具有深刻、鲜明、生动以及整体把握论述对象的特点。较之人们热衷《围城》的单一比喻 ,则是有待开发的丰富矿藏。对此 ,提出“对喻”,予以研究     

Stochastic comparisons of order statistics,with applications in relibility

This paper reviews recent developments in the stochastic comparison of order statistics. The results discussed are basically: (l) Stochastic comparisons of linear combinations of order statistics from distributions F and G where G^?1 F is convex or starshaped. (2) Stochastic comparisons of individual order statistics and of vectors of order statistics from underlying heterogeneous distributions by the use of majorization and Schur function theory. (3) Stochastic comparison of random processes. Applications to reliability problems are presented illustrating the use and value of the theoretical results described     

Extension of two-sided test to multiple treatment trials

In a two-treatment trial, a two-sided test is often used to reach a conclusion, Usually we are interested in doing a two-sided test because of no prior preference between the two treatments and we want a three-decision framework. When a standard control is just as good as the new experimental treatment (which has the same toxicity and cost), then we will accept both treatments. Only when the standard control is clearly worse or better than the new experimental treatment, then we choose only one treatment. In this paper, we extend the concept of a two-sided test to the multiple treatment trial where three or more treatments are involved. The procedure turns out to be a subset selection procedure; however, the theoretical framework and performance requirement are different from the existing subset selection procedures. Two procedures (exclusion or inclusion) are developed here for the case of normal data with equal known variance. If the sample size is large, they can be applied with unknown variance and with the binomial data or survival data with random censoring.     

Random Accessibility as a Parallelism to Reliability Studies on Simple Graphs

ABSTRACT

Graphs are classified according to the numbers of vertices and edges they contain. For simple graphs a concept of accessibility is defined and its relation to the graph reliability problem is investigated. Exact results are derived for special subclasses of bipartite and tripartite graphs in relation to accessibility. Several conjectures on the relation of accessibility and all-terminal reliability are numerically illustrated without proof.     

Efficacy of programmes for the unemployed: discrete time modelling of duration data from a matched-comparison study

An evaluation is described of two UK Government programmes for the long-term unemployed in Great Britain, Employment Training and Employment Action, using discrete time hazard modelling of event histories. The study design employed a closely matched comparison group and carefully chosen control variables to minimize the effect of selection bias on conclusions. The effect of unobserved heterogeneity is investigated by using some standard random effect model formulations.

Estimation of regression models with equi-correlated responses when some observations on the response variable are missing

The present article deals with the problem of estimation of parameters in a linear regression model when some data on response variable is missing and the responses are equi-correlated. The ordinary least squares and optimal homogeneous predictors are employed to find the imputed values of missing observations. Their efficiency properties are analyzed using the small disturbances asymptotic theory. The estimation of regression coefficients using these imputed values is also considered and a comparison of estimators is presented.
