Skateboarding behind the EU lorry—the experience of Romanian professionals struggling to cope with transition while assisting care leavers

As a result of the fall of communism in 1989, the Romanian system of public care for children experienced massive shifts in its structure and ethos. One vulnerable area in any such system is the care leaving stage when young people can fall between the childcare and the adult protection systems. This article draws on a qualitative study that focused on the preparation and early outcomes for care leaving in Bucharest. This was undertaken between December 2002 and March 2004 by Anghel, a Romanian researcher reading for a PhD in England. The research aimed to explore the care leaving process through the views and experiences of the care leavers and the childcare professionals. The article briefly describes the structure and legislative base of the care leaving system in Romania, and discusses the political context created by the EU accession process. It then explores some of the themes emerging from the interviews with the professionals operating the system and discusses them within the overarching theme of transition within transitions: the transition of the young people within the context of transitions simultaneously being experienced by the professionals, the childcare system, and the entire society.     

The 9/11 effect: Toward a social science of the terrorist threat

After 9/11, public attitudes on numerous social issues changed. While many studies have examined post-9/11 attitude trends on specific topics, such as civil liberties or war, few have investigated the scope and variety of these effects. Did the events of 9/11 have a brief effect on a limited number of attitudes, or did they produce numerous, long-term changes in the way Americans think, feel and act? Drawing on a broad range of pre-post-9/11 studies, this review essay begins to answer this question by developing a framework for categorizing these effects and distinguishing short-term changes from long-term ones. The framework is intended to help facilitate an interdisciplinary social scientific research agenda on the effects of 9/11 and other terrorist acts. The essay concludes by explaining the social importance of the public's response to terrorism and the need for further research on this topic.

Coping with economic stress: Implications for helping professionals

This article suggests methods for educational and service application of the research generated from the regional project, W-167, Coping with Stress: Adaptation of Nonmetropolitan Families to Socioeconomic Changes. Similarities among families studied as well as differences among state projects are highlighted. Suggestions for application center on strategies for educating rural families directly, providing information to those who work with rural families, and developing support systems conducive to the rural environment.Randy R. 绩效工资:一把双刃剑

绩效工资目前已成为我国薪酬支付的主流方式之一,但有关绩效工资对员工态度和行为的影响的研究还很少.本文以574名知识员工为研究对象,实证分析了绩效工资对知识员工分配公平感、帮助行为和自我发展的影响,研究同时考察个体层面的价值认同和组织层面的程序公正氛围,对绩效工资与员工态度和行为关系的调节作用.数据分析采用多层次线性模型,分析结果显示,绩效工资在个体层面有效提高了员工分配公平感和自我发展行为,而在组织层面,绩效工资降低了组织中员工分配公平感和帮助行为的整体水平.在高价值认同和高程序公正氛围中,绩效工资对员工态度和行为有更多的积极作用;在低程序公正氛围中,绩效工资则呈现一定的消极作用.本文最后讨论了研究的理论和实践意义,以及研究的局限.
