Identifying Nonproportional Covariates in the Cox Model

This paper addresses problem of testing whether an individual covariate in the Cox model has a proportional (i.e., time-constant) effect on the hazard. Two existing methods are considered: one is based on the component of the score process, and the other is a Neyman type smooth test. Simulations show that, when the model contains both proportional and nonproportional covariates, these methods are not reliable tools for discrimination. A simple yet effective solution is proposed based on smooth modeling of the effects of the covariates not in focus.

Orthogonal polynomials,repeated measures,and SPSS

We discuss the construction of discrete orthonormal polynomials, using MAPLE procedures. We also study two important applications of these polynomials in statistics: in multiple linear regression and in repeated measures analysis. In particular, it is argued that the tests given by SPSS for linear and other trends in a within-subject factor are inefficient. Examples are given, including two (from psychology and medicine, respectively) which involve repeated measures and SPSS. Extensive tables of discrete orthornormal polynomials are given in the Appendix.     

国内外能源价格的非线性特征研究——以原油和天然气为例

基于BDS法和替代数据法,对布伦特原油现货价、大庆原油现货价以及NYMEX天然气期货价和亨利中心天然气现货价的日数据进行了非线性特征检验。研究表明,上述能源价格收益率不服从正态分布,存在长相关特征并具有一定的非线性结构。在替代数据法检验时发现,嵌入维数小于6时,上述能源价格的原始数据和替代数据没有显著性差异,表明在维数低于6时,可以用少于6个经济变量进行线性模拟,以对相关能源价格进行短期预测,以便为中国能源政策制定及能源行业的科学发展提供有益启示。

英语双及物句式"S-V-N1-N2"的本质特征是以简洁的形式表达复杂的"给予"意义,其基本语义是"给予"。在基本句式中,动词"给予"的是N2,句式"给予N1"的是"V+N2"。本文对英语双及物句式的意义假设是"S-V+N2→N1"。通过论证,该语义假设能够对复杂的双及物动词作出同一的解释。     

Healing an Invisible Minority

Abstract

Up to two million gay, lesbian, and bisexual persons have been in a mixed-orientation marriage as have an unknown number of transgender people. Not all partners come out while married. When they do, their heterosexual spouses and children are affected. Straight spouses face complex issues related to sexuality, marriage, parenting, identity, integrity, and belief systems. Children cope according to their age and developmental stage. Since most of the attention is focused on the GLBT persons, their partners are generally overlooked. The Straight Spouse Network (SSN) provides peer support and research-based information to help them cope, heal, and grow in strength, integrity, and understanding, thereby becoming models for their children. Many become advocates for social justice. Counseling by trained therapists knowledgeable about mixed-orientation marriages can assist them and their families to resolve their issues more effectively.
