Better know an HRD scholar: a conversation with Monica Lee

This article contains a conversation with Monica Lee, and is part of a series that focuses on different HRD scholars – the aim being to better understand the people behind the names we see in print. Monica is a Life Member of Lancaster University, was a founding member of the University Forum of HRD, and was the founding editor of Human Resource Development International. The conversation explores Monica's background, how she got into HRD, how she overcame dyslexia and recovered from her cerebral hemorrhage, how the University Forum was created, and how HRDI came about. The conversation also considers the consequences of placing boundaries around HRD, about how we are guided by our subconscious, and about the impact on HRD of future changes to organizations and structures.

走向多元文化整合的当代美国华裔写作——以美国华裔作家李健孙小说《老虎尾巴》为例

自上世纪90年代以来,美国华裔文学在题材、主题、体裁等方面都比以往的作品更为复杂多元。美国华裔作家开始超越族裔写作的界限,趋向更为普世性的思考。李健孙的小说《老虎尾巴》对康拉德《黑暗的心》的戏仿,其目的在于解构原作中的欧洲中心主义倾向,并通过上校“拉布朗克”这一人物形象,揭示美国霸权主义行径。小说所表达的,即在不同文化及族群之间平等和谐的多元文化整合观念,正是当代美国华裔文学的主题叙述之一。

朝鲜诗人李尚迪与晚清学者刘喜海经过20余年的相互交往，两人建立了深厚的友谊。在具体文化交流中，李尚迪为刘喜海的重要金石学著作《海东金石苑》题写了序诗，并通过刘喜海把清代朴学巨著《皇清经解》带回朝鲜，促进了两国的文化交流。     

Rewriting Singapore and rewriting Chineseness: Lee Guan Kin’s diasporic stance

This study proposes to view Lee Guan Kin (the former director of the Center for Chinese Language, Culture, and Division of Chinese at Nanyang Technological University) in the historical context in which the identity of Southeast Asian Chinese has transformed from overseas Chinese to ethnic Chinese, from Straits Chinese to Chinese Singaporeans. Based on the interview with Lee and the study of Lee’s numerous publications, this article exemplifies Lee’s enduring efforts on researching diasporic Southeast Asian Chinese and their ties with Chinese language and culture is a meaningful choice rather than an essentialist returning to ‘roots.’ In this article, Lee’s continuous engagement with China, Chinese language, and culture is illustrated by analyzing Lee’s assertion of ‘doing justice’ for Lim Boon Keng and Tan Lark Sye. Accordingly, this study is divided into four parts. First, the concept of Chineseness is reviewed and explored in the context of Southeast Asia. Second, the historical background of English-educated and Chinese-educated Chinese groups and their varying degrees of Chineseness are introduced. Then this study analyzes how Lee does justice for Lim Boon Keng, a baba who served as chancellor of Xiamen University for 16 years, and Tan Lark Sye, who was the founder of former Nanyang University. Lee believes that both prominent figures were unfairly and relentlessly treated by Chinese and Singaporean historiography, respectively, and therefore, Lee wants to do justice to them as a way to relocate their position in the context of Chinese diaspora and to redefine Chinese accordingly. Finally, this study argues that locality defines Lee’s Chineseness, her relation with China, China studies, Chinese identity, or Chinese culture. While locality defines Lee’s Chineseness, a diasporic stance characterizes her articulation, which challenged the homogeneous threat of identity imposed by the nation-state and the kind of Chineseness traditionally shaped by the authority of a sino-centric core.

小说《断背山》中,两个牛仔的爱情打动了一批读者的心。两位主角没有英俊的外表,高贵的气质,他们举止粗鲁,少言寡语,然而他们的爱在瞬间爆发,爱得深重,却无法面对现实中的压力与排斥。他们的爱情充满了妥协与退让,也伤害了彼此和他人,这并不是伟大的完美的爱情,但作者给了我们一种无奈的选择：当爱情与现实生活发生矛盾时,为了生存与安宁,对现实妥协,把爱留在心中。文章通过对人物语言、行为和环境的分析,来阐述这是一种怎样的现实主义爱情观,它是怎样产生。     

论李安电影的“性”和谐

对李安导演的电影文本剖析,认为李安电影呈现了多元文化下的"性"和谐特征:在"性"与伦理的冲突与调和中,呈现了人与自然、人自身、人际关系的和谐,并借生命的逝去达到"性"与伦理的调和,以包容、妥协及理智达到"性"与伦理的和谐。     

农珠三角农业流动人口“代耕农”的社会生态——基于惠州博罗石湾李岗村代耕农部落的调研

“代耕农”是珠三角地区农业流动人口中的特殊群体,对当地经济社会发展有一定贡献。但其在代耕过程中引发系列社会问题。影响社会快速和健康发展。通过对惠州市博罗县石湾镇李岗村代耕农抽样调查资料的统计分析,从频率、方式、内容等方面描述珠三角代耕农生产与生活的社会生态,希望社会及政府部门关注“代耕农”,认识其问题的严重性,并制定相关政策积极解决。     

Understanding Ivy Lee's declaration of principles: U.S. newspaper and magazine coverage of publicity and press agentry, 1865–1904

Ivy Lee's 1905 “Declaration of Principles” has been called the “starting point of modern public relations,” but what did it mean in the context of his time? Analysis of press discussion finds that, while press agentry was connected to the circus and theater, “corporate publicity” was linked to Theodore Roosevelt's call for the release of financial information in the public interest. The paper confirms that scholars do not have a clear understanding of public relations history and identifies areas for further research.
