Building Bridges: The Role of an Undergraduate Mentor

I share some advice and lessons that I have learned from working with many wonderful students and colleagues, in my role as Undergraduate Chair of Statistics at Purdue University since 2008. I also reflect on developing, implementing, and sustaining a new living, learning community environment for statistics students.

A first generation critic comes of age: Reflections of a critical gerontologist

This paper reflects upon the direction and evolution of my scholarly endeavors as a sociologist of four decades in the field of aging, with thoughts on the future direction of this work and the challenges for the larger field. The perspective presented is located within two frameworks of active debate: the sociology of knowledge(s) [Gouldner, A. 1970. The Coming Crisis of Western Sociology. New York: Basic Books] and public sociology, which is one of the four major types of sociology identified by Burawoy [Burawoy, M. (2005, 2007). A call for public sociology. In D. Clawson, R. 在我国,社会工作专业教育自1987年以来取得了长足的发展,但同时也面临着种种困境和挑战。本文就社会认可度、理论和教材本土化、专业师资、实验室和实习基地建设四大问题对社会工作专业教育当前的困境进行了分析,并提出了相应的对策。

论专业宣传实务活动中的“镜中我”效应

自我观念是通过社会化形成和发展的,库利的镜中我理论清楚的阐述了自我发展的阶段。目前在中国大陆社会工作专业发展处于“开荒种田”的状态,容易导致专业学生尤其大一学生产生专业自我观念难以确定的困惑,会视自己为专业的牺牲者、旁观者和路过者。而开展积极的专业宣传实务活动正是解决这一问题的有效途径和方法。通过专业宣传实务活动,让学生走入社会,在社会互动的镜子中塑造正确的专业自我观念,激发专业自信,实现专业认同。     

欧洲几种典型职业足球俱乐部盈利模式的分析

文章通过对欧州顶级职业足球俱乐部收入数据的分析,对目前几种典型的职业足球俱乐部盈利模式进行了归纳,将其总结为:意大利的“高转播权收入模式”、曼联的“高门票收入模式”、拜仁的“高经营开发收入模式”和皇马的“高商品销售收入模式”。同时特别分析了前两种盈利模式近几年的发展趋势,总结出转播权收入是俱乐部收入提高最活跃的因素。      

Building Resilience in Social Workers: An Exploratory Study on the Impacts of a Mindfulness-based Intervention

Burnout is a frequent and well-documented consequence of social work practice. The literature suggests that mindfulness-based interventions might help develop the mental states and emotional skills that are indicators of resilience. This mixed-methods, non-randomised controlled, exploratory study with 14 social workers in Canada investigated differences in social workers’ levels of stress, resilience, and burnout after a mindfulness-based intervention, compared to a waitlist group. The intervention group was also interviewed about changes in their relationships within the workplace, their perceived sense of mental health, and wellbeing. Results suggested that the mindfulness-based intervention significantly decreased the treatment group’s perceived stress compared to those on the waitlist and continued to decline for 26 weeks post-intervention. Intervention participants reported positive changes in attitudes, perspectives, behaviours, and energy in relation to their workplace relationships with peers and supervisors. Mindfulness-based interventions for reducing stress and building resilience to burnout in social workers and other helping professionals hold promise, and invite further research.     

Child Protection Social Workers' Engagement in Continuing Professional Development: An Exploratory Study

This paper reports the findings of an exploratory study into the nature of child protection social workers' engagement in, and understanding of, continuing professional development (CPD) in Ireland. Qualitative methods were used given the exploratory nature of the research. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight child protection social workers from a community-based child protection department in Ireland. Interviews were analysed using thematic analysis. A review of the literature is provided and key findings are outlined and discussed. These findings relate to the nature and frequency of participation in CPD, perceived motivators and barriers to participation in CPD, and social workers' views on the potential impact of statutory registration of Irish social workers (which was implemented in the months after this study was carried out) on CPD participation. Research limitations and suggestions for future research are considered, along with the implications of this study for social work practice.     

Confidence Bands for ROC Curves With Serially Dependent Data

We propose serial correlation-robust asymptotic confidence bands for the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and its functional, viz., the area under ROC curve (AUC), estimated by quasi-maximum likelihood in the binormal model. Our simulation experiments confirm that this new method performs fairly well in finite samples, and confers an additional measure of robustness to nonnormality. The conventional procedure is found to be markedly undersized in terms of yielding empirical coverage probabilities lower than the nominal level, especially when the serial correlation is strong. An example from macroeconomic forecasting demonstrates the importance of accounting for serial correlation when the probability forecasts for real GDP declines are evaluated using ROC.
