We consider methods for reducing the effect of fitting nuisance parameters on a general estimating function, when the estimating function depends on not only a vector of parameters of interest, θθ, but also on a vector of nuisance parameters, λλ. We propose a class of modified profile estimating functions with plug-in bias reduced by two orders. A robust version of the adjustment term does not require any information about the probability mechanism beyond that required by the original estimating function. An important application of this method is bias correction for the generalized estimating equation in analyzing stratified longitudinal data, where the stratum-specific intercepts are considered as fixed nuisance parameters, the dependence of the expected outcome on the covariates is of interest, and the intracluster correlation structure is unknown. Furthermore, when the quasi-scores for θθ and λλ are available, we propose an additional multiplicative adjustment term such that the modified profile estimating function is approximately information unbiased. This multiplicative adjustment term can serve as an optimal weight in the analysis of stratified studies. A brief simulation study shows that the proposed method considerably reduces the impact of the nuisance parameters.  相似文献

For semiparametric models, interval estimation and hypothesis testing based on the information matrix for the full model is a challenge because of potentially unlimited dimension. Use of the profile information matrix for a small set of parameters of interest is an appealing alternative. Existing approaches for the estimation of the profile information matrix are either subject to the curse of dimensionality, or are ad-hoc and approximate and can be unstable and numerically inefficient. We propose a numerically stable and efficient algorithm that delivers an exact observed profile information matrix for regression coefficients for the class of Nonlinear Transformation Models [A. Tsodikov (2003) J R Statist Soc Ser B 65:759-774]. The algorithm deals with the curse of dimensionality and requires neither large matrix inverses nor explicit expressions for the profile surface.  相似文献

Inference in the presence of nuisance parameters is often carried out by using the χ2-approximation to the profile likelihood ratio statistic. However, in small samples, the accuracy of such procedures may be poor, in part because the profile likelihood does not behave as a true likelihood, in particular having a profile score bias and information bias which do not vanish. To account better for nuisance parameters, various researchers have suggested that inference be based on an additively adjusted version of the profile likelihood function. Each of these adjustments to the profile likelihood generally has the effect of reducing the bias of the associated profile score statistic. However, these adjustments are not applicable outside the specific parametric framework for which they were developed. In particular, it is often difficult or even impossible to apply them where the parameter about which inference is desired is multidimensional. In this paper, we propose a new adjustment function which leads to an adjusted profile likelihood having reduced score and information biases and is readily applicable to a general parametric framework, including the case of vector-valued parameters of interest. Examples are given to examine the performance of the new adjusted profile likelihood in small samples, and also to compare its performance with other adjusted profile likelihoods.  相似文献

As a compromise between parametric regression and nonparametric regression, partially linear models are frequently used in statistical modelling. This article considers statistical inference for this semiparametric model when the linear covariate is measured with additive error and some additional linear restrictions on the parametric component are assumed to hold. We propose a restricted corrected profile least-squares estimator for the parametric component, and study the asymptotic normality of the estimator. To test hypothesis on the parametric component, we construct a Wald test statistic and obtain its limiting distribution. Some simulation studies are conducted to illustrate our approaches.  相似文献

The basic reproduction number of an infection, R 0, is the average number of secondary infections generated by a single typical infective individual in a totally susceptible population. It is directly related to the effort required to eliminate infection. We consider statistical methods for estimating R 0 from age-stratified serological survey data. The main difficulty is indeterminacy, since the contacts between individuals of different ages are not observed. We show that, given an estimate of the average age-specific hazard of infection, a particular leading left eigenfunction is required to specify R 0. We review existing methods of estimation in the light of this indeterminacy. We suggest using data from several infections transmitted via the same route, and we propose that the choice of model be guided by a criterion based on similarity of their contact functions. This approach also allows model uncertainty to be taken into account. If one infection induces no lasting immunity, we show that the only additional assumption required to estimate R 0 is that the contact function is symmetric. When matched data on two or more infections transmitted by the same route are available, the methods may be extended to incorporate the effect of individual heterogeneity. The approach can also be applied in partially vaccinated populations and to populations comprising loosely linked communities. The methods are illustrated with data on hepatitis A, mumps, rubella, parvovirus, Haemophilus influenzae type b and measles infection.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with model selection and model averaging procedures for partially linear single-index models. The profile least squares procedure is employed to estimate regression coefficients for the full model and submodels. We show that the estimators for submodels are asymptotically normal. Based on the asymptotic distribution of the estimators, we derive the focused information criterion (FIC), formulate the frequentist model average (FMA) estimators and construct proper confidence intervals for FMA estimators and FIC estimator, a special case of FMA estimators. Monte Carlo studies are performed to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method over the full model, and over models chosen by AIC or BIC in terms of coverage probability and mean squared error. Our approach is further applied to real data from a male fertility study to explore potential factors related to sperm concentration and estimate the relationship between sperm concentration and monobutyl phthalate.  相似文献

In the multistage processes, quality of a process or a product at each stage is related to the previous stage(s). This property is referred to as a cascade property. Sometimes, quality of a process is characterized by a profile. In this paper, we consider a two-stage process with a normal quality characteristic in the first stage and a simple linear regression profile in the second stage. Then we propose two methods to monitor quality characteristics in both stages. The performance of the proposed two methods is evaluated through a numerical example in terms of average run length criterion.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a new varying coefficient partially nonlinear model where both the response and predictors are not directly observed, but are observed by unknown distorting functions of a commonly observable covariate. Because of the complexity of the model, existing estimation methods cannot be directly employed. For this, we propose using an efficient nonparametric regression to estimate the unknown distortion functions concerning the covariates and response on the distorting variable, and further, we obtain the profile nonlinear least squares estimators for the parameters and the coefficient functions using the calibrated variables. Furthermore, we establish the asymptotic properties of the resulting estimators. To illustrate our proposed methodology, we carry out some simulated and real examples.  相似文献
