Partner Naming and Forgetting: Recall of Network Members

Network researchers must contend with recall, forgetting, alters whose names are not known, and other potential biases in estimating the size of personal (ego) networks. We use data from a longitudinal study of sexual and drug use ego networks. Results show 6% forgetting for 30-day sex partners, 18% for drug use partners, and 26% for close friends. Forgetting is decreased by behavioral specificity and salience. Forgetting increases with network size and time frame. In the domain of sex relationships, global estimates of network size, at least over a period of 30 days, are equivalent to estimates from partner naming 92% of the time if anonymous partners are accounted for.

Recall of Nonverbal Cues: Exploring a New Definition of Interpersonal Sensitivity

Interpersonal sensitivity, defined as the accurate recall of another person’s nonverbal behavior, was measured in two studies. In Study 1, nonverbal recall accuracy (NRA) was based on recall of cues expressed by a man and/or woman being interviewed on videotape. Retest reliability after 2 weeks was satisfactory and the male and female tests demonstrated sufficient convergence. Participants could assess their own recall accuracy at better than chance levels; ability to decode the meanings of visual nonverbal cues was positively related to NRA; discriminant validity of NRA was demonstrated with regard to general cognitive ability; and women had higher NRA than men. In Study 2, NRA was based on recall of a live interaction partner. Women again had higher NRA than men; NRA was significantly better than chance; and higher NRA was associated with more smiling and self-reported positive affect during the interaction. Nonverbal recall accuracy is a promising new definition of interpersonal sensitivity.

Product recalls and organizational learning: ConAgra's responses to the peanut butter and pot pie crises

This study focused on ConAgra's communication strategies utilized during its peanut butter and pot pie product recalls. A content analysis revealed that ConAgra handled each recall differently, with little evidence of organizational learning. The use of strategic ambiguity during the peanut butter recall enabled ConAgra to respond more successfully to consumers than during the pot pie recall.

A balanced multi-level rotation sampling design and its efficient composite estimators

We present a multi-level rotation sampling design which includes most of the existing rotation designs as special cases. When an estimator is defined under this sampling design, its variance and bias remain the same over survey months, but it is not so under other existing rotation designs. Using the properties of this multi-level rotation design, we derive the mean squared error (MSE) of the generalized composite estimator (GCE), incorporating the two types of correlations arising from rotating sample units. We show that the MSEs of other existing composite estimators currently used can be expressed as special cases of the GCE. Furthermore, since the coefficients of the GCE are unknown and difficult to determine, we present the minimum risk window estimator (MRWE) as an alternative estimator. This MRWE has the smallest MSE under this rotation design and yet, it is easy to calculate. The MRWE is unbiased for monthly and yearly changes and preserves the internal consistency in total. Our numerical study shows that the MRWE is as efficient as GCE and more efficient than the existing composite estimators and does not suffer from the drift problem [Fuller W.A., Rao J.N.K., 2001. A regression composite estimator with application to the Canadian Labour Force Survey. Surv. Methodol. 27 (2001) 45–51] unlike the regression composite estimators.
