The praxis of ethnic studies: transforming second sight into critical consciousness

This article focuses on a youth participatory action research (YPAR) program called the Social Justice Education Project (SJEP) that fostered young people of color’s critical consciousness. Their critical consciousness emerged through praxis (reflection/action) while focusing on preserving ethnic studies in Tucson, Arizona. Because the SJEP home was in ethnic studies, the youth also struggled to keep their program alive. The Arizona Department of Education claimed the program bred ‘radicals’ who wanted to overthrow the government and therefore lobbied the state legislature to ban K-12 ethnic studies in public schools. In January 2012, the ban went into effect, shutting down ethnic studies classes as well as the SJEP. Young people’s qualitative research on their struggle led to action to save the education that gave them hope for a more equitable and just world. The article addresses the praxis of YPAR, which sparks a thought process leading to the drive to take action. Observing and documenting educational injustices inspire the need to seek radical change of Self and schools. Through the reflection and action facilitated by YPAR, young people of color construct a message about the importance of ethnic studies for individual as well as social transformation.

International Organisations and the Politics of Migration

The last two decades have seen major shifts in the way international organisations (IOs) address migration. While state sovereignty remains central in the politics of migration, IOs are increasingly developing their visions regarding how the cross-border movements of people should be governed (or ‘managed’) and, in some cases, they have become important actors in the design and implementation of migration policy. Research on the role and functions of IOs remains scarce, however, and there are major uncertainties, concerning not only their actual influence, but also the political context in which they operate and the outcome of their initiatives. According to their advocates, the involvement of IOs would enable greater international cooperation, which would lead to policies that pay greater attention to human rights and development imperatives. Yet, at times, interventions by IOs seem to reinforce existing imbalances, as these organisations primarily tend to align themselves with the interests and agenda of developed receiving states. In addition, the work of IOs is embedded in a complex institutional setting, characterised by sometimes-problematic institutional relations between them, as well as between IOs and other international cooperation mechanisms.

Research in family financial counseling

Domains of family financial counseling research are proposed in order to establish criteria for assessing research needs in this relatively new field. Identification of the research domains implies progress for an emerging profession. A survey of the family financial counseling research to date is reported. Results of research in several domains are shown to demonstrate how results from empirical studies can contribute to the theory and practice of family financial counseling.Research conducted under the auspices of Agricultural Experiment Station Research Project 01803, Family Economic Problems and Resource Management.Dr. Williams is an Associate Professor in the Department of Consumer Sciences and Retailing, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana 47907. Her Ph.D. was received from Purdue. Current research interests include income adequacy, economic security, financial problems, and financial counseling.

南高史地学派引论（下）

南高史地研究会是南京高等师范学校的一个以在校学生为主体的学术社团,实行导师制,主要的导师为柳诒徵和竺可桢;会员中的骨干为陈训慈、张其昀、缪凤林、郑鹤声、向达和刘扌炎藜等人。上述诸人因为学术旨趣相近,在史地研究会及其会刊《史地学报》停止活动后,另行活动,最终形成了现代学术史上与学衡派有紧密关系的南高史地学派。

小说《卡拉马佐夫兄弟》主人公对精神之父的寻找同时也印证了整个社会对“父亲”的需要。而“父亲”在更广泛意义上是指一种精神信仰,一种外在社会关系和传统道德标准的约束。陀思妥耶夫斯基通过小家庭这个窗口窥视了整个俄罗斯大社会的风景,从德米特里最终的被救赎到伊凡的道德皈依再到阿廖沙对宗教的笃信,我们看到了几兄弟在“寻父”的道上走着不同的路程,却都达到了同一终点。     

初论国民经济动员学的研究纲领

国民经济动员学科的建立,关键在于确立其研究纲领。笔者主张以借鉴决策理论学派的成果为主,兼及现代管理理论各学派中对国民经济动员学科建设有益的理论观点,通过对国民经济动员活动的深入考察,面向国民经济动员实践的需要,通过创造性思维,建立国民经济动员学的管理学研究纲领。目前,应当首先从国民经济动员潜力评价和国民经济动员决策支持系统两个方面入手,形成科学研究的突破口,迅速积累研究成果,完善国民经济动员学科体系。
