Robust prediction and extrapolation designs for misspecified generalized linear regression models

We study minimax robust designs for response prediction and extrapolation in biased linear regression models. We extend previous work of others by considering a nonlinear fitted regression response, by taking a rather general extrapolation space and, most significantly, by dropping all restrictions on the structure of the regressors. Several examples are discussed.     

A remark on the Bahadur representation of sample quantiles for negatively associated sequences

Under mild conditions, we investigate further the Bahadur representation of sample quantiles for negatively associated sequences, whose convergence rate is faster than the corresponding one in Ling (2008).     

Secondary agency conflicts: A synthesis and proposed measurement model

Secondary agency conflicts typically arise when ownership and control are combined in the hands of dominant shareholders who could then seek to misappropriate returns at the expense of minority shareholders. This type of agency conflict has attracted attention from researchers for the past nearly three decades. However, efforts at measuring secondary agency conflicts have been fragmented and scattered. The absence of a coherent and valid approach to assess the scope and intensity of secondary agency conflicts has impeded progress in both empirical and conceptual development of the topic area. Based on a review of the extant body of literature, this paper develops a composite Shareholder Inequity index that measures the potential for secondary agency conflicts employing three different governance dimensions that are grounded in the agency literature: blockholder power, differential control, and the absence of board neutrality. The index is tested and validated empirically using a sample of 748 publicly listed U.S. firms. The resulting Shareholder Inequity index demonstrates high levels of validity and reliability. Future corporate governance studies can utilize this validated measure to investigate potential secondary agency conflicts more consistently and rigorously in order to strengthen organizational theory development and research.     

Risk and protective factors for secondary traumatic stress and burnout among home visitors

ABSTRACT

The overarching goal of this study was to understand the context of home visitor secondary traumatic stress and burnout, and how this might affect intention to quit among home visitors, particularly focusing on potential risk factors and supportive strategies identified by the home visitors. All home visitors providing services in the state in which the research was conducted (N = 27) completed a structured interview and a quantitative survey at two time points, 6 months apart. Results indicated that more than two-thirds of the home visitors experienced either medium or high levels of secondary traumatic stress and burnout over the course of the study. Approximately one quarter of home visitors indicated thinking of leaving their present positio. Qualitative data indicated that risk factors associated with burnout included those related to both direct and non-direct services. Risk factors associated with secondary traumatic stress included traumatic stress of families, inability to recognize one’s own experiences of secondary traumatic stress, and unhealthy work culture. In terms of protective factors, home visitors strongly emphasized the importance of having a supportive supervisor who they could trust and communicate with openly.     

Reactions to cyberbullying among high school and university students

In this study, behavioral and emotional reactions to cyberbullying were investigated by surveying 567 undergraduate-level university students and 211 high school students. Among the study participants, 170 of the undergraduates (29.98%) and 120 of the high school students (56.87%) reported that they had recently been cyberbullied. A four-factor scale with 37 items was used to investigate the behavioral cyberbullying reactions of victimized students. The four factors were revenge, countermeasure, negotiation and avoidance. An additional two-factor scale with 11 items was used to classify victimized students’ emotional reactions as either internalizing or externalizing. Explained variance values of both scales were above 50%, and the factors were found to have acceptable internal consistency coefficients. Behavioral and emotional reactions varied according to gender and school level. Computer self-efficacy and internet use were associated with different reaction types.

Bivariate return periods via 2-Copulas

In this paper we provide a very general framework for studying the return periods of random events depending upon the joint behaviour of two non-independent random variables. We show that using the 2-Copula describing the dependence features of the underlying joint distribution may greatly simplify the calculations, and even yield analytical expressions for the isolines of the return periods. In addition, we introduce the new definitions of primary and secondary return periods, which provide relevant information for performing risk-assessment. The results obtained are extremely important in the applications, where the return period is fundamental during the design phase.     

Secondary Traumatic Stress in Social Workers Responding to Disasters: Reports from the Field

Social workers are called to respond to disasters to provide assessment, crisis counseling and trauma treatment as part of the recovery effort. While research has identified the types of interventions appropriate in assisting trauma survivors, little empirical research exists to help address the distress responses that social workers experience when exposed to the trauma material of disaster survivors and their families. Case examples can inform social work practice using evidence informed interventions and recording the outcomes. This article presents three case histories of social workers responding to disasters, the course of their secondary traumatic stress responses and their struggle to overcome the psychological adversity they faced.     

略论中国赋的感春传统及其在朝鲜的流衍──以朱子《感春赋》与宋尤庵《次感春赋》为中心

在中国古代辞赋文学中,感春的传统可溯自屈原。后世对楚骚中伤春之音的祖述继承,往往因两个相关主题──时间与理想的展开,易于产生动人心魄的佳篇。朱子《感春赋》中“悼芳月之既徂兮,思美人而不见”,就是关合两者的凝炼表现。对于如何消释春愁,这在魏晋玄风影响下的赋作中,曾一度出之以真正悦乐的情调,但因个性弱化而难开生面。既忧时又乐道的情理内涵,在朱子等富文学情趣的理学家手中,获得恰当的拓展,表现出儒家情怀与骚人哀怨的融通。朱子《感春赋》在朝鲜辞赋史上颇具影响,先后出现不少次韵及和韵之作。李朝中期儒学家家尤庵的《次感春赋》在精神境界与情理容量上,对朱子原作尤具会心。究其原因,则在于“惟晦翁其不敢忘”的生命热情以及对儒家忧乐观的深刻体悟。赋的感春传统在朝鲜的流衍,是颇具文化意蕴的一个文学现象。
