Estimating Long and Short Run Effects in Static Panel Models

This paper assesses the biases of four different estimators with respect to the short run and the long run parameters if a static panel model is used, although the data generating process is a dynamic error components model. We analytically derive the associated biases and provide a discussion of the determinants thereof. Our analytical and numerical results as well as Monte Carlo simulations illustrate that the asymptotic bias of both the within and the between parameter with respect to the short run and long run impact can be substantial, depending on the memory of the data generating process, the length of the time series and the importance of the cross-sectional variation in the explanatory variables.     

Video/Filmography on Single Parenting

The purpose of this video/filmography is to provide potential users with a sampling of recent videotapes that deal with various aspects of single parenting. Titles were gleaned from film and video directories, distributor catalogues, and video review publi- cations which are identified in Appendix A. Date of release, running time in minutes, address and telephone number of distributors are given with each title along with purchase/rental prices. The titles presented are organized into the following five categories: (1) The Single Parent Experience, (2) The Childs Experience, (3) Teenage Single Parenting, (4) General Interest, and (5) Feature-Length Tele- vision and Film Releases. Awards received are noted at the end of each synopsis and intended audience levels are provided.     

A Comparison of Alternative Estimators for Revised Monthly Import Statistics

The import carryover problem and the estimator of revised monthly import level are described. Two alternative estimators are developed. The performance of these estimators and the estimators of month-to-month change derived from them are investigated.

对历史涂抹的还原——以沈从文的演讲稿《短篇小说》为例

在历史的某种机缘下诞生的文学作品,往往承载着作家在既定文化立场上的主体意识表达,也折射着时代的风风雨雨。然而历史总是出于某种需要,对具有影响力的优秀文学作品进行了这样或那样的涂抹,遮蔽了其本真的历史面貌。尤其在20世纪80年代后再版的一批作家全集中,有些收录的作品与原始版本相去甚远,为中国现代文学的研究工作带来了某些误导,并可能导致错误的一再复制与蔓延。基于这种考量,现以收录在《沈从文全集》中的演讲稿《短篇小说》为例,通过校勘,爬梳出其历史流变的内在规律和脉络,以期洞见时代风雨是怎样地侵蚀与雕琢作家作品。这对我们走进历史现场,还原历史本真,立体化解读作家作品都有着不可估量的价值和意义。     

MAKING IT TRADEABLE: VIDEOTAPES,CULTURAL TECHNOLOGIES AND DIASPORAS

In this commentary I address some of the key ideas presented in Kolar-Panov's paper titled ‘Video as the diasporic imagination of selfhood: a case study of the Croatians in Australia’ which was published in Cultural Studies 10: 2, 1996. My own research, conducted during the same period, on the same group of migrants and in the same country, found very little evidence to support some of the assertions made in the paper. I therefore challenge the author's main assumptions about the impact of video technology on the formation of diaspora identities and address some of the theoretical issues behind the notion that video technology is the first widespread postmodern communication medium. I highlight the intrinsic similarities between telecast and video technologies and show how Kolar-Panov's argument tends to slide into both technological and social determinism.
