清前期广东绿营兵生存状况之考察——以硇洲营为中心

嘉庆初年，广东硇洲营官兵共同签定了通营舍帮的互助性条例，不久一海之隔的崖州营官兵也制定了类似条例。其原因在于：清前期绿营底层官兵收入单一，唯一可以依靠的军饷常被赳扣，生活难以维持，军纪废弛。绿营官兵被迫走上违法犯罪道路，严重影响了地方社会的稳定。     

Governance struggles in the case of Camp Carroll conflict

This research examines the multifaceted governance struggles associated with the alleged burial of Agent Orange at Camp Carroll in Chilgok County, Korea. To deal with this incident, the Korea central government forms bureaucratic conflict management system, which can be characterised as a joint response system, a one-voice system for press briefing, and an intergovernmental joint supporting group. However, this system conflicts with the participatory governance of local governments and civic society. This research explores why the Korean central government's bureaucratic conflict management prevails over the participatory governance of local governments and environmental non-governmental organisations (NGOs). It argues that the Status of Forces Agreement between Korea and the USA provides the Korean central government with a reason to curb the participation of local governments and environment NGOs in the governance of Camp Carroll conflict.     

More Damned Lies and Statistics: How Numbers Confuse Public Issues and Chance: A Guide to Gambling,Love, the Stock Market, & Just About Everything Else

In this article we review two historical approximations to the Poisson and binomial cumulative distribution functions (CDFs); that is, the Wilson–Hilferty and Camp–Paulson approximations. Both of these approximations reduce to standard normal formulas that produce very accurate estimates of the Poisson and binomial CDFs, and are thus quite simple to implement. Additionally, in an upper-division undergraduate or master’s level probability and inference course, the derivation of these approximations presents a nice opportunity to introduce and study the distributional relationships between the gamma and Poisson CDFs, and the binomial, beta, and F CDFs. This article presents the basic theorems and lemmas needed to derive each approximation, along with some relevant examples that compare and contrast the precision of these approximations with their large-sample, limiting normal counterparts.
