马歇尔大法官与杰斐逊总统的恩怨——点评《杰斐逊全传》中的一段历史公案

约翰·马歇尔大法官和杰斐逊总统都是美国历史上著名的人物,但两人在担任联邦政府公职期间却一直冲突不断,尤其体现在“马伯里诉麦迪逊案”、弹劾蔡斯事件以及“伯尔叛国案”中.在这些冲突中二人的孰是孰非,是中外史学家的热门话题,论者往往依据个人偏好而有失公正.通过对刘祚昌先生晚年大作《杰斐逊全传》中马歇尔与杰斐逊关系的分析,本文试图更公正地评价二人的关系.

Recursive models for categorical data

Standard methods for recursive models with continuous endogenous variables are extended to models with categorical endogenous variables. The concept of a reduced-form equation is generalized in a natural way to cover nonlinear regression functions and, in particular, models with categorical endogenous variables. Maximum-likelihood estimation and asymptotic chi-square tests are described. Two numerical examples are presented: a linear recursive two-equation model for all-categorical data, and a combined linear and logit three-equation recursive model with both categorical and continuous endogenous variables. Limitations of the present work and directions for further extension are noted.

Effects of export diversification in a primary commodity export country: Colombia

This article examines the income and allocation effects of an appropriate export diversification policy by means of a computable general equilibrium model for Colombia. This kind of policy is often envisaged to reduce the dependence of developing countries on primary commodity exports, which are considered to be a source of economic instability. The results show that an appropriate diversification of exports has positive income effects in Colombia.     

William Wilberforce and Thomas Chalmers

Abstract

Wilberforce describes how sinners' faith in Jesus Christ enabled them to problem-solve, perform religious activities with Him redeeming them from sin. In turn, Chalmers developed Wilberforce's ideas into a complex evangelical Christian framework and charitable method encouraging all persons to redeem themselves by developing faith in Jesus Christ's expiation of their sins encouraging their performance of righteous activities or doing righteous activities endowing them with the Holy Spirit's grace and faith in Christ. Chalmers charitable method employed collocative processes of sequential problem-solving and caring activities between benefactors and recipients developing Christian and caring institutions, families and persons into harmonious communities. Loch and Richmond developed Chalmers charitable method into socially oriented charitable and social work methods. doi:10.1300/J377v26n02_04     

RESPONSE

In this engagement with the idea of the common in contemporary South Africa, the author uses three episodes from his own experience in and of South Africa – a performance at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in 2009; a bus journey from Cape Town in 2010; news of the Marikana mine massacre in August 2012 – as well as recent work by theorists Lauren Berlant, Bernard Stiegler and Paolo Virno, as prompts to explore how issues of public and private feature in recent representations and experiences of the South African postcolony. In responding to several of the essays included in this issue, the author also discusses the role of the institutions and infrastructures of cultural mediation in the production of cultural products that engage with these issues, and gestures towards the responsibilities of intellectuals and artists in interrogating their own positions in relation to the idea of the commons in South Africa.
