We study, from the standpoint of coherence, comparative probabilities on an arbitrary familyE of conditional events. Given a binary relation ·, coherence conditions on · are related to de Finetti's coherent betting system: we consider their connections to the usual properties of comparative probability and to the possibility of numerical representations of ·. In this context, the numerical reference frame is that of de Finetti's coherent subjective conditional probability, which is not introduced (as in Kolmogoroff's approach) through a ratio between probability measures.Another relevant feature of our approach is that the family & need not have any particular algebraic structure, so that the ordering can be initially given for a few conditional events of interest and then possibly extended by a step-by-step procedure, preserving coherence. 相似文献

This study is a contribution to the development of family resource management scales, specifically financial management scales. Principal axis factor analysis, with varimax rotation, is used to assess underlying relationships in 23 family resource management variables related to time and money resources. Reliability and content, construct, and criterion-related validity of the scales are assessed. Two scales that are reliable and have some degree of validity are developed: frequency of financial problems and frequency of financial management. The scales could be used in future research, teaching, or counseling to organize financial management concepts.Preparation of this research was supported in part by the Illinois Agricultural Experiment Station. Data were collected in conjunction with the cooperative regional research project NC-182, Family Resource Utilization as a Factor in Determining Economic Well-Being of Rural Families. Recent analyses of protest policing in Western democracies argue that there has been a marked shift away from oppressive or coercive approaches to an emphasis on consensus based negotiation. King and Waddington (2005) amongst others, however, suggest that the policing of international summits may be an exception to this rule. This paper examines protest policing in relation to the 2005 G8 summit in Gleneagles, Scotland. We argue that 'negotiated management' cannot be imported wholesale as a policing strategy. Rather it is mediated by local history, forms of police knowledge and modes of engagement. Drawing on interviews and participant observation we show that 'negotiated management' works best when both sides are committed to negotiation and that police stereotyping or protestor intransigence can lead to the escalation of any given event. In closing we note the new challenges posed by forms of 'global' protest and consider the implications for future policing of protest. 相似文献

The impacts of two types of social desirability bias, self-deceptive enhancement (SDE) and impression management (IM), were
examined on self-reports of gambling problems, measured by the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS), and recent gambling behavior, as measured by the Timeline Followback (TLFB) method, in a sample of college students (N = 191), and a sample of treatment-seeking problem gamblers (N = 49). Consistent with our expectations, IM was negatively associated with SOGS scores in both samples. IM was most highly
correlated with SOGS scores among treatment-seeking participants (r = −.44, p < .01). Substantial numbers of participants in both samples had high enough IM scores as to call into question the validity
of their self-report gambling data, according to published interpretive guidelines. With respect to SDE, we had predicted
that it would be positively related to gambling behaviors and gambling-related problems, but found that SDE was inversely
related to SOGS scores in both samples. Very little evidence was found for social desirability effects on TLFB scores. Thus,
preliminary evidence was obtained that self-report data on gambling problems, but not on gambling behavior (frequency of gambling
and amount of time and money spent), may be susceptible to the effects of impression management in both college students and

Voluntary organisations have become major providers of numerous social welfare services that previously were supplied by the
state. In Britain, between 35 and 40% of the average human services charity’s annual income now derives from government (predominantly
local government) sources, meaning that the acquisition of fresh contracts to undertake government funded work, in conjunction
with the maintenance of good relations with government funders vis-à-vis current assignments, is increasingly important for
ensuring a human service charity’s financial survival. An organization that wishes to obtain new contracts and to keep government
bodies satisfied with its present activities will need to market itself effectively. This empirical study examined two aspects
of charity marketing relevant to this requirement: the extent to which voluntary organizations applied the principles of strategic
account management (otherwise known as key account management) to their relations with government funders, and the organizational
characteristics (passion and commitment, low wage costs, etc.) that they emphasized to government bodies when making bids.
A number of organizational variables (e.g., mission rigidity, strategic intent, short term operational focus) were employed
in regression analyses as possible determinants of: (i) the degree to which a charity used strategic account management; and
(ii) the genres of the organizational characteristics that it accentuated when tendering for government funded work.

This paper examines whether differentiating among types of intimate partner violence enhances the explanatory capacity of
extant empirical models.The analysis uses national-level Canadian data to evaluate an alternative approach to operationalizing
intimate partner violence, drawing upon Black's (1990) and Johnson's (1995) theoretical work. The main argument suggests that
current efforts to explain intimate partner violence with victimization studies are inadequate because they typically do not
measure key sociological variables. The failure to assess the contexts within which different types of violence occur further
hinders explanatory efforts.The paper concludes with recommendations for innovative theoretical and methodological strategies
