This paper challenges the notion of "care", arguing that people who need support in their daily lives have been constructed as "dependent people". Instead, the author argues, if we want to empower people we must learn from the Independent Living Movement, from the people who struggled against segregation and insisted that access to personal assistance over which they have control is a civil rights issue. The paper takes issue with Clare Ungerson's perspective on the new direct payments legislation. This legislation is an important stage in the achievements of a civil rights movement and social researchers have a moral responsibility to collaborate with this movement in any work which they develop on issues which are not of mere academic interest but which concern people's rights to choice and control in their lives. 相似文献

This paper discusses the degree and type of stress experienced by adults and young adults, coping strategies used, and their family, financial, and community satisfaction in economically distressed rural counties. Data were analyzed from questionnaires completed by 447 adults and 118 young adults. Results indicate greater perceived stress, use of some less effective coping strategies, and less satisfaction among young adults. Both groups indicate similar numbers of stressful events and a generally positive perception of community social services.Dorothy Z. Price received her Ph.D. from Michigan State University. This chapter is a review and analysis of literature examining the dynamics of never married female parents who are teenage heads of households. In reporting the findings, three theoret- ical models are utilized: deficit, decision-making, and subjective utilities models. The synthesis of the research includes intra- and interrelationships among the models, demographic patterns, and public policy and research implications. The transition from being childless to becoming a mother is a challenge for females of any age. However, the reality of parent- hood, with its many responsibilities, can be a culturally shocking experience for a teenager. Adolescence is a period when many changes are occurring. When these two are coupled, adolescence and parenthood, a very demanding situation is created. When adding a third and fourth variable, that of becoming a household manager and remaining unmarried, a life long struggle for survival may become reality. Extended family, service providers and policymakers must help these young women reach self-sufficiency. This can only be realized through strategies resulting in long term benefits for single adoles- cent mothers and their children. Failure to do so will likely perpet- uate a continuous intergenerational cycle of poverty. These tech- niques must be proactive, innovative, and strategically focused. 相似文献

Social support in single parents' transition from welfare to work: Analysis of qualitative findings Since 1995, single parents have been required to participate in welfare‐to‐work activities. While quantitative meta‐analyses have consolidated the social and economic impacts of such transitions, no attempt has yet been made to synthesise the qualitative evidence. In this article, I offer an analysis of 16 qualitative articles that explore the role of social support in the lives of single mothers making the transition from welfare to work. By focusing on the functions and reciprocal nature of social support, this study examined how welfare‐to‐work programmes shift women's dependence from the state onto family and friends, many of whom are in similarly impoverished situations and/or are unable to provide adequate support. Furthermore, women are often required to reciprocate the support they receive, which creates additional barriers to a successful welfare‐to‐work transition. 相似文献
