Delays in emotion regulation and attention control are common among children growing up in poverty, and they contribute to significant socioeconomic gaps in school readiness and later school attainment. In this study, the emotion regulation and attention control skills of 210 prekindergarten Head Start participants were assessed (M age = 4.80 years old). Home interviews and videotaped parent–child interactions were used to evaluate three aspects of parenting (e.g., warm‐sensitive, directive‐critical, and parenting stress). Structural equation models documented significant, unique associations linking directive‐critical parenting and parenting stress with poor child emotion regulation skills. Directive‐critical parenting was also uniquely associated with low levels of child attention control. Warm‐sensitive parenting was not uniquely related to either emotion regulation or attention control at this age. The findings suggest that, by prekindergarten, parent stress management and reduced directiveness emerge as the primary correlates of child emotion regulation and attention control whereas warm‐sensitive parenting plays a diminished role.  相似文献

The development of effective interventions for foster children with behavior problems is essential given the consequences of behavior problems for children's placement stability and permanency outcomes. This article presents findings from a pilot study of an intervention providing parent management training (PMT) and support to foster parents in groups and home visits. The intervention was an adaptation of the KEEP (Keeping Foster Parents Trained and Supported) group intervention, provided in a large urban child welfare agency serving predominantly African American foster parents. The study used an intent-to-treat design, with 25 foster parents of 31 children (ages 4-12) in specialized foster care assigned to either an intervention or treatment as usual control group. Longitudinal outcomes were analyzed using random effect regression models. Over time, children's behavior problems were significantly lower in the intervention group relative to the control group, and the effect of the intervention was partially mediated by parents' understanding of how to appropriately use the intervention parenting skills. These results provide support for the effectiveness of KEEP with urban foster children with significant behavior problems.  相似文献

学前阶段作为残障儿童接受教育的开端,是我国残疾人教育事业的重要组成部分。以残障儿童家长学前教育需求调查 问卷为研究工具,对随机整群选取的S市3所特教幼儿园和2所特殊学校学前部的110名残障儿童家长进行了问卷调查。结果 表明,残障儿童家长学前教育需求整体水平较高,尤其对学校性质及形象需求、保育及服务需求最为迫切;残障儿童家长的学 前教育需求与儿童残障程度呈显著负相关,与儿童年龄段、家长学历、家庭月收入呈显著正相关;残障儿童家长年龄、家庭月收 入、家长学历、儿童年龄对其学前教育需求具有显著的预测作用。相应的建议:地方政府要积极推进公办融合幼儿园和特色融 合幼儿园的建设;加强残障儿童家庭和校(园)间的合作,促进康教(育)结合;对残障儿童家庭实施政策倾斜,确保其享有经济 保障;根据儿童残障程度,实施差异性教育;教育主管部门应充分认识到家长年龄、学历、家庭月收入等因素对其学前教育需求 的影响,改善相应的管理工作,满足家长的教育需求。  相似文献

Over recent decades research has confirmed the sensible belief that to participate in criminal proceedings (that were designed for adults) child witnesses may benefit from support and preparation. This is so even in countries where special measures have been introduced to make it less arduous for children to give their testimony (e.g. closed circuit television to allow children to testify away from the actual courtroom; video recorded evidence‐in‐chief). Indeed, it could be argued that as more and more children provide testimony (e.g. as alleged victims or witnesses), the more comprehensive should be preparation and support programmes for them. However, while in some countries preparation and support programmes are now offered to such children, the needs of these children's (non‐offending) parents/caregivers seem to be ignored. Research on the intergenerational transmission of incarceration tends to emphasize the strong association between fathers' involvement with the criminal justice system and sons' behavioral outcomes, such as experiencing incarceration. The father–son association in incarceration risks is, however, not the only mechanism through which these risks may travel across generations. Although female rates of incarceration are generally low (even for women who experienced parental incarceration when they were girls), women could transmit incarceration risks across generations through their choice of partner. This article uses administrative data on three generations in Denmark to show that assortative mating—the nonrandom selection of partners with similar characteristics—indeed make women just as likely as men to transmit incarceration risks across generations.  相似文献

Questionnaire items tapping feelings about pregnancy were administered to 173 young, low‐income primiparous Black mothers who either were pregnant or had delivered within the past year. A factor analysis indicated that 11 items together measured mothers’ acceptance of the pregnancies that resulted in the births of their first children. Links to mothers’ later parenting stress, warmth, and their toddlers’ attachment security were explored. Pregnancy acceptance was a negative predictor of one aspect of maternal parenting stress (distress resulting from feelings that parenting is burdensome) and a positive predictor of toddler attachment security. It did not, however, predict another aspect of parenting stress (feelings that interactions with children are not enjoyable) or maternal warmth.  相似文献

This paper reports on one part of a research project, funded by the Nuffield Foundation, to evaluate the effects of involving parents in 83 initial child protection conferences in a northern city between May 1991 and June 1992. The experiences of two groups of families are recounted and compared, those who attended the conferences and those who did not An analysis was made of the degree to which the parent's participation in the conference affected their overall attitude to the intervention. There were differences between the two groups with regard to their feeling fairly treated, and in their relationship with their social worker. The factors most strongly associated with attitude were whether the child had been removed from the family or statutory action was recommended, and whether the parents agreed abuse had taken place. The fear of removal of the child had an independent influence on the overall attitude, irrespective of whether or not the parents attended the conference. The parents who attended were glad they had gone but found the experience emotionally difficult Although their positive feelings of involvement did not extend to a conviction that they had influenced the decisions, their on-going relationship with their social worker was less likely to have been impaired where they had been invited and attended.  相似文献

Given parental influence on children's educational choices, new family constellations may impact on sex segregation in school and thus in the labour market. This paper addresses the question of what consequence father absence and stepfather presence may have for choice of the male‐dominated natural science/technology (NT) programme in Swedish upper secondary school. The data include register information on all pupils who attended the ninth grade of the Swedish compulsory school in 1998 and 1999 and their parents (n = 73,824). While children in mother‐only households are less likely to choose the NT programme compared with children residing with two original parents, this is accounted for by differences in socioeconomic conditions and in grade sum. Fathers, like mothers, also have a more direct influence on children's educational choices of field of study via their own education and occupation. However, what has not been noted in previous research is that this also applies to ‘absent’ fathers and, for boys, to stepfathers as well.  相似文献

The present study examined the impact of psychosocial treatment for children in residential boarding schools on relations with their parents and family, and on the extent of the children's satisfaction with the boarding school. Fifty-one boarding schools (91% of the boarding institutions in Israel) participated in the longitudinal study. The sample consisted of 418 respondents, including boarding school directors, social workers, psychologists, programme directors, counsellors, therapists, and house mothers. The findings reveal that the children maintained a moderate level of contact with their parents and families. The children's overall level of satisfaction with the boarding school was found to be moderate, and increased to the extent that they received more hours of psychosocial and therapeutic care.  相似文献
