Midnight Basketball is one example of a new generation of social resource programs which are designed to mend the social fabric of inner city communities. In this paper, we present the results of an evaluation of Milwaukee's Midnight Basketball League, In the Paint at One Two, which indicates that the ''returns'' on the money invested in the program are far greater than the returns on the enormously popular punitive and paternalistic policies and programs currently advocated at all levels of government. During the first year, the Midnight Basketball program (1) reduced crime rates by 30% in the target area, (2) created a safe haven in which participants (and the fans) could engage in positive social activities, (3) channeled the energy of gang members in a positive direction, and (4) significantly improved the educational and career aspirations of program participants. This study examines how historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) use their home pages to present images of themselves. The home pages of 96 institutions were examined using content analysis. The findings suggest that HBCUs are not using their home pages to project a strong image. For example, less than 10% of these institutional home pages made mention of institutional rankings, and less than 20% made mention of students, athletics or faculty. The authors make suggestions for how HBCUs can better project institutional image with changes to home page content and design. 相似文献

Abstract The objective of this study is to explore the mechanisms of peasant political protest and social conflict in nineteenth-century Japan. While political protest and social conflict have often been referred to as constituting two major categories of peasant unrest throughout feudal Japan, past studies on nineteenth-century peasant uprisings, based mainly on a class conflict paradigm, did not treat them as such. This study aims at examining differential mechanisms between protest and conflict, and at assessing the applicability of the class conflict paradigm.
A time-series analysis is performed using the annual data of peasant uprisings and antecedent socioeconomic and political conditions during the period 1800-1877. The study results strongly suggest that differential mechanisms between political protest and social conflict existed in the nineteenth-century, and that the applicability of a class conflict paradigm is, at the very least, dubious. Based on the results, combined with historical-contextual knowledge, an alternative explanation is also suggested. 相似文献

‘Looked after’ young people are among the most disadvantaged members of our society. While their disadvantaged status should not be ignored, poor outcomes are often emphasised at the expense of good ones. This article reports a study that adopts the concept of resilience to understand the narratives of the participants’ experience of care and foster care. A total of 15 young mothers, aged 16–19 and mainly from black African backgrounds, were interviewed. Despite lacking a ‘secure base’, informants invested in a sense of moral identity and a source of self‐directedness, which enabled them to move from victim of circumstances to individuals who overcome their circumstances. 相似文献

网络诗歌的民间比现实社会受逻辑规则限制的民间更为开放和自由,这种虚拟的空间由于具有网络无远弗届的匿名性而呈现出狂欢化的审美表征。它采取的诙谐的文化态度和审美形式,体现出民间反抗中心和权威的智慧,其于文本中呈现出的形同质异的讽刺性模拟、语境错位的黑色幽默、暗寓解构的嘲讽笑谑,成为网络民间最典型的审美表征。但网络诗歌的民间具有的极端自由的色彩和藏污纳垢性,导致诗歌的审美表征从审美到审丑的偏执发展,由此引起的网络诗歌的热点和争议确实很引人深思。 相似文献

近年来,以厦门PX事件为代表的环境集体抗争事件频繁发生,“公民环境权”或“环境人权”日益成为我国环境法和环境政治理论与实践中值得关注的一个议题.通过《中华人民共和国环境保护法》及其相关性法律《中华人民共和国民事诉讼法》以及专门性法律《中华人民共和国水污染防治法》等法律的不断修改,我国的公民环境权利或“环境人权”正在得到更好的制度化保护与保障.但也无可置疑的是,中国的环境法制(治)建设还未达到一个历史性“拐点”,即明确确立与宣示生态环境保护的公民环境权利或“环境人权”的宪政基础.中国环境法制(治)建设的更大进展,除了法律渠道下的渐进改良,更为关键的也许是来自政治与社会的动力,尤其是来自民间基层的推动. 相似文献
