Auditing biochemical research data: A case study

There is little documentation in the literature of how to conduct a data audit of laboratory research. The purpose of such an audit is to verify the extent to which the published data agree with the corresponding laboratory notebook data and whether the data thus examined appear to be sufficient to justify the published conclusions. A case study is presented, which demonstrates a step by step approach towards conducting a data audit of a published research study.

对本科教学工作水平评估政策的发展进行了梳理，以部委所属某高校为例，探究该项政策执行过程中的某些实际情况。从该院校层面入手，以院校政策执行的时间为脉络，描述了本科教学评估政策在执行过程中的实际情况，对评估准备工作、评估指标的分解、评估材料的准备、教职工的任务分配以及整改六个阶段的问题进行了分析。     

“水资源利用与保护”课程新型案例教学模式探讨

社会对环境类人才的能力要求越来越高，教师需要着力培养学生的创新能力，强化训练学生的实践能力。在深入研究案例教学的理论基础上，根据“水资源利用与保护”课程的知识结构、课程特点及教学目标，结合教学对象的学习需求，紧扣世界水环境急剧变化给水资源利用与保护提出的新挑战，面向西部的水资源特性及城市水环境现状，设计教学案例，制定实施案例教学流程，对“水资源利用与保护”课程的新型案例教学模式进行了探讨。     

“It's the Beast Thing”

This article examines the representations of men and masculinities in contemporary crime narratives featuring a female protagonist. These “chick dick” stories (which adapt elements from the hardboiled detective novel, film noir, chick lit, and chick flicks) repeatedly engage with the gendered power dynamics made visible and problematic through the intersection of “chick” and crime genres, most particularly the sexualization of violence. In these narratives, popular masculinities operate as deployable concepts to dramatize contemporary gender relations. By tapping into the popular sentiment of a “crisis in masculinity,” chick dick texts also mobilize a rhetoric of unrepresentable male victimization and individual male pathologies. This strategy highlights the spaces and places in which masculinities are made vulnerable at the same time as it offers simplistic and individualized explanations for the systemic sexualized violence that dominate these narratives.     

Asymptotic behaviour of a test statistic for detection of change in mean of vectors

The paper gives an asymptotic distribution of a test statistic for detecting a change in a mean of random vectors with dependent components. The studied test statistic has a form of a maximum of a square Euclidean norms of vectors with components being standardized partial cumulative sums of deviations from means. The limit distribution was obtained using a result of Piterbarg [1994. High deviations for multidimensional stationary Gaussian processes with independent components. In: Zolotarev, V.M. (Ed.), Stability Problems for Stochastic Models, pp. 197–210].     

A single-featured EWMA-X control chart for detecting shifts in process mean and standard deviation

The combined EWMA-X chart is a commonly used tool for monitoring both large and small process shifts. However, this chart requires calculating and monitoring two statistics along with two sets of control limits. Thus, this study develops a single-featured EWMA-X (called SFEWMA-X) control chart which has the ability to simultaneously monitor both large and small process shifts using only one set of statistic and control limits. The proposed SFEWMA-X chart is further extended to monitoring the shifts in process standard deviation. A set of simulated data are used to demonstrate the proposed chart's superior performance in terms of average run length compared with that of the traditional charts. The experimental examples also show that the SFEWMA-X chart is neater and easier to visually interpret than the original EWMA-X chart.     

One Woman's Life Journey

Abstract

This qualitative study examines the life history of an 80 year old woman grassroots peace activist through the lens of spirituality (Borysenko, 1996; Canda & Furman, 1999) and relational theory (Belenky, Clinch, Goldberger, Tarule, 1986; Covington & Surrey, 1997). Using a case study design and multiple data sources, the major psychological, social, and historical events of her life were reviewed. Major theoretical themes that emerged from the interview are described. These findings provide useful insights about how the quest for inner peace and spirituality motivates and sustains community activism, an area critical to social workers who use peaceful diplomacy to organize efforts for social justice outcomes.     

非常规灾害事件情景演化的概率性生长模式——基于台风莫拉克的探索性案例研究

使用探索性案例研究方法，对台风莫拉克在浙江的演化过程进行分析。研究发现，非常规灾害事件的情景演化过程与生物体的生长过程具有诸多相似之处，同时又具有明显的概率性。在案例研究基础上，进一步构建数学模型，给出了概率性生长模式的形式化表达，也为仿真模拟和计算实验提供了理论基础。     

Non-Custodial African American Fatherhood:

The authors provide a conceptual foundation for the use of a research approach in exploring program and policy issues associated with empowering poor, young, non-custodial African American fathers. A post-positivist, ecological, Afrocentric, bicultural research perspective, using the case study method, is proposed as the most effective means of understanding this population and developing appropriate interventions.     

Doing Good,Public Good,and Public Value

In this article, using multiple illustrative case examples, we demonstrate that philanthropic institutions are in the business of creating public value. In framing the work of philanthropy more broadly to include the process of public value creation, philanthropic institutions and leaders are challenged to be more strategic not only in their mission‐fulfillment grant‐making with nonprofit organizations but also in the way they stimulate and encourage collaboration, create the “third space” necessary to incubate ideas to transform society, and leverage resources to increase the return on their investments toward system‐wide change. The implications for philanthropic actors and institutions suggest that the strategic contributions they make toward creation of public value are those that go beyond transactional performance measures, such as number of dollars spent or clients receiving services, to include ways that their investments are amplified by meaningful partnerships with nonprofit and other organizations, changed behaviors of institutions and individuals, and transformative public policies.
