Person × Context Effects on Anticipated Moral Emotions Following Aggression

We investigated person (sex, aggression level), context (witness type, victim reactions), and person × context effects on children's anticipated moral emotions following hypothetical acts of aggression against a peer. Children (N = 378, mean age = 11.3 years) were presented a series of hypothetical vignettes in which the presence of witnesses (no witnesses/most liked classmates/all of the class) and victim's reactions (neutral/ sad/ angry) were manipulated. The results indicated several person effects (e.g., girls anticipated more guilt and shame but less pride than boys; aggressiveness was related to less guilt and shame), as well as context effects (e.g., anticipated shame depended on who witnessed the situation and the emotional reactions of the victim). However, person × context effects predominated. The overall pattern of results indicated that girls and low‐aggressive children were more sensitive to contextual cues than boys and high‐aggressive children. The findings support the importance of a person × context approach to understanding the emotional reactions of different children in different situations.     

户外拓展训练对大学生社会性情感影响研究

运用文献资料法、观察法、调查法等研究方法，从大学生社会性情感的理智感、道德感和美感三个方面，探讨了户外拓展训练对大学生社会性情感的影响。结果表明，户外拓展训练与大学生社会性情感发展呈正相关。为了提高户外拓展训练培养大学生社会性情感的效果，应做好从传统体育课向户外拓展训练课的转变，高校应普及户外拓展训练课程和加大投入。

This study aims to examine internal assets as predictors for positive emotions among at-risk youth in Malaysia. A set of questions was sent out to 1149 youth who were drawn from low-income apartments in the suburbs of Kuala Lumpur. Of the 1149 participants approached, only 403 participants met the inclusion criteria and completed the questionnaires. Multiple regression analysis suggested that school engagement, self-esteem, interpersonal competence and motivation were significantly predicted positive emotions. The findings suggest that at least four predictors of internal assets are required to produce positive emotions.

社会共享情绪是指社会事件发生时,公众基于共同的利害关注,由;陆会人际分享产生的同步性情绪反应。问卷调查表明中国公众对某社会热点事件产生以愤怒为主导的多种情绪反应,结构方程分析表明：社会认同和社会情绪反应显著影响社会行动的效能与坚持意愿;社会分享调节策略显著影响社会认同和坚持意愿。这说明情绪调节的特征在社会行动的发展变化中表现出重要的缓冲作用,为公共事务中的情绪管理提供了新依据。     

Emotional Eruptions,Volcanic Activity and Global Mobilities – A Field Account from a European in the US During the Eruption of Eyjafjallajökull

Abstract

The eruption of Iceland’s Eyjafjallajökull volcano in April 2010 set off a number of environmental, economic and cultural effects obstructing thousands of people in the midst of their global mobility flows. It halted, as well, the exchange of goods and commodities and exposed the vulnerability of the global aeromobility system. In this paper an account is given of how the event was experienced by a European academic attending a number of North American conferences at precisely the time of the eruption. The paper is an attempt to describe how people reacted emotionally as well as rationally, attempting to find strategies for coping with the consequences of the eruption.     

Proud to be a woman: Womanhood,old age,and emotions

ABSTRACT

This article takes its starting point in the discussions regarding intersecting discourses of gender and age and the lived experience of older women. The main objective is to discuss the experience of womanhood among older women and to demonstrate their active role in creating spaces for themselves and their friends and affecting each other. The study is based on narrative interviews with female members of the University of the Third Age (U3A). The main findings describe older women who actively engage with discourses of gender to embark on positive constructions of womanhood. They create their own spaces for women’s activism that are filled with positive emotions mobilized to support each other. This article discusses such findings and their relevance to the study of old age and gender. As a result, it serves as an invitation to think and feel differently about older women and their experience of womanhood.     

Mixing Up the Goulash: Essential Ingredients in the “Art” of Social Group Work

ABSTRACT

This paper explores the connection between social group work and creativity. Parallels are drawn between the techniques and discipline of the creative artist and those of the social group worker. Four prominent themes of group work are discussed in relation to the work of the artist: empathy, accessibility to a range of emotions, maintaining a sense of humor, and full use of self within the group environment. Examples from a range of group populations are used to highlight the four identified “ingredients” in the art of social group work practice.
