Relational Ethics and Moral Blindness: Startling Incongruities in Couple and Family Life

This article explores the common experience of working with couples and family members who describe their partners and children as important to them yet at the same time are cavalier, neglectful, ignorant, and even destructive in dealings with their loved ones. People who fail to relate ethically are said to be prone to have stagnant relationships, become corrupt in seeking solutions to moral problems, be more depressed, have poorer health problems, and experience lower quality relationships. This article describes ethical fading and moral blindness in couples and families and in our work as therapists. It argues a relational ethics frame that fosters ethical sensitivity and stronger moral identity both in ourselves and others is an important addition to our therapeutic repertoire.     

Involvement With Past‐Union Children and Couple Childbearing Intentions

Parents with children from both past and current unions create complex stepfamilies. The author investigated the association of past‐union children with intentions for a second or third child in the current union of 1,739 couples in the United Kingdom Millennium Cohort Study. Both partners' reports of their own resident and nonresident past‐union children as well as fathers' reports of involvement with nonresident past‐union children create a comprehensive measurement of past‐union children. The analysis revealed that coresident past‐union children were more closely associated with childbearing intentions than were nonresident past‐union children and that weekly contact with nonresident children had a stronger link to intentions than did payments. These results suggest that the value of the past‐union children as siblings and the time commitment made to these children are particularly salient to parents' decisions about further childbearing in their current union.     

Is It Our Day or the Bride’s Day? The Division of Wedding Labor and Its Meaning for Couples

Based on qualitative interviews with southern California heterosexual engaged couples, I examine how wedding planning work is divided between the bride and the groom and how couple’s meaningfully interpret the division of labor. I find that couple’s wedding planning work disproportionately falls to women, especially that labor that is invisible. Wedding work, in many respects, is another form of unpaid and unappreciated women’s work, not that unlike housework. Yet, couples do not understand wedding work as an unequal pursuit. Couples use an assortment of interactional strategies to interpret wedding work as a joint and equal enterprise.     

Individual and Crossover Effects of Work Schedule Fit: A Within‐Couple Analysis

A couple‐level analysis with a sample of 105 female reduced‐hours physicians and their full‐time–employed husbands found individual and spouse crossover effects: Each spouse's ratings of own schedule fit predict own job‐role quality; wives' ratings of partner/family schedule fit predict their marital‐role quality, with a similar trend for husbands; husbands' ratings of own schedule fit predict wives' marital‐role quality; and husbands' ratings of partner/family schedule fit and wives' ratings of own schedule fit predict husbands' psychological distress. These findings highlight the interdependence of couple members' experiences and illustrate potential costs of wives' trading off time at work for time at home.

Spousal Abuse Among Immigrants From Ethiopia in Israel

This ethnographic study obtains first‐hand information on spousal abuse from Ethiopian immigrants in Israel. Data include 23 interviews with male and female immigrants of various ages and 10 professionals who worked with this community as well as observations and documents. The findings, verified by participants, show that during cultural transition, the immigrants’ code of honor, traditional conflict‐solving institutions, and family role distribution disintegrate. This situation, exacerbated by economic distress, proved conducive to women’s abuse. Lack of cultural sensitivity displayed by social services actually encouraged women to behave abusively toward their husbands and destroy their families. Discussion focuses on communication failures in spousal‐abuse discourse between immigrants from Ethiopia and absorbing society, originating in differences in values, behavior, social representations, and insensitive culture theories.

螺旋线行波管是唯一能够在倍频程以上范围内高功率输出的器件。在本世纪７０年代中发展起来的金属翼片加载技术可以改善螺旋线系统特性，降低相速变化，提高带宽范围，金属翼片加载技术是螺旋线促波系统重点研究的一个方面，文中对此螺旋线翼片加载模型作了一些分析，得到了色散方程、衰减常数和耦合阻抗等公式，并作了数值分析，计算结果与实验结果具有很好的一致性。     

对完善婚姻家庭财产制度的若干立法建议

本文就如何进一步完善婚姻家庭财产制度，提出如下立法建议：逐步建立婚前公证制度；夫妻离婚时，共同财产的分割应着重保护妇女的住房权利；对隐匿、转移夫妻共同财产的规避法律的行为，应制定惩戒措施；建立给付子女抚养费的经济担保人制度，以期婚姻家庭法制更趋完备     

夫妻忠实义务理论与实务维度之考量

检视夫妻忠实义务制度,不难发现,其在司法实践运行中有某些障碍,在夫妻忠实义务规定方面也存在某种缺失。为此,完善夫妻忠实义务规定,还有必要提出一些立法构想或建议,如,尽快完善相应法律规定,将夫妻忠实义务确定为离婚法定事由,尽快构建夫妻婚内民事责任机制,这在一定程度上体现了公法对私法的适度渗透。
