Home and away: modern Korean identities and minorities

ABSTRACT

South Korea is an evolving country that encourages immigration, and which presents itself as a multicultural country. Nevertheless, multiculturalism has not gone as smoothly as the government would like us to believe, and discrimination and racism are serious issues, especially due to Korea’s self-imposed ideology of Korean purity and homogeneity. This complicates Koreans’ sense of identity, both at home and abroad, issues dealt with in this special issue, which features three articles that deal with the complexities of ethnicity and identity in the twenty-first century. These articles look at the transformative notions surrounding Korean identity in Korea, and how the lingering legacy of colonial history negatively frames this identity in Japan. Finally, there is an examination of Korean immigrant entrepreneurship in Argentina, looking at the Korean community there in a very different socio-historical reality, where people negotiate their identities beyond the structures of Japan’s colonial legacy.     

边疆治理视野下的认同整合研究

民族认同与国家认同在我国边疆多民族地区存在复杂的关系,尤其伴随着国内外各种影响因素的急剧变化,边疆地区的民族认同与国家认同的矛盾与冲突在局部地区被凸显出来,成为我国边疆治理的一项十分紧迫的现实难题。因此,必须将边疆地区出现的认同问题纳入我国边疆治理视野之中,并通过切实可行的措施对民族认同与国家认同进行有效整合,以确保边疆社会的安定与国家的统一。     

新时代少数民族大学生“五个认同”生成机理与实现向路——基于自我认同与思想政治教育的交互逻辑分析

新时代少数民族大学生“五个认同”实效性关涉的意义十分重大。作为“五个认同”生成主体和接受思想政治教育的客体,少数民族大学生自我认同与思想政治教育的多维度交互对认同实效起关键性机理作用。交互达致意味着积极的自我认同与有效的思想政治教育本体功能形成良性循环,两者在动力因、压力因、激励因三个层面产生契合,促成“五个认同”生成的因应性机理发生;反之,交互冲突会导致认同困惑、认同矛盾、认同解离乃至认同危机。充分认识并厘清自我认同与思想政治教育的交互逻辑,从激发动力因、转化压力因、创设激励因思考少数民族大学生“五个认同”的实现向路。

20世纪初期上海报纸广告对市民的身份塑造--以二三十年代的《申报》为例

近代上海,由于商业、战乱、开埠等原因,形成为一个典型的移民城市,同时它还是受西方影响较大的商业大都市.在这座移民加殖民的城市中,市民的身份处于流动、即时、无据的状态.20世纪二三十年代以<申报>为代表的报纸广告,用话语构建了一个虚拟的上等社会,鼓动市民通过消费去追求品位和时尚,去塑造和体认自己梦寐以求的身份地位.     

Ethnic,gender and class identities of Polish migrant mothers: intersecting maternal narratives with transnationalism and integration

ABSTRACT

Based on a doctoral study of Polish migrant mothers living in Germany and the United Kingdom, this paper examines women's narratives pertinent to ethnicity, gender and social class, as well as the mutual entanglements of these dimensions. While the ethnic identity matrix often evokes dimensions of transnationalism and integration, the addition of the femininity component illustrates the diversity among contemporary Polish migrant women in Western Europe with regard to their identity practices. The analyses of transnational, translocal and cosmopolitan orientations highlight their binding to a contextualized understanding of femininity – its various markers and corollary epitome of motherhood, particularly in the Polish context. The main findings comprise an ideal-type based typology of migrant mothering, which sheds light on how mobility and gender intersect. The discussions adopt the social class lens in an attempt to focus on the implications of certain maternal and migrant identities among Polish women. By underscoring the value of both integration and transnationalism perspectives, the paper calls for additional aspects of translocality and hybridization, seeing them as noticeable social markers of the Polish female migrants’ biographies.     

A Missing Voice

Abstract

Contemporary gay and lesbian social service literature still heavily focuses on White middle/upper-class issues and uses an isolated and fixed concept of homosexuality. As a result, the discourse has only a limited applicability to people with “dual” or “multiple” identities, accentuating the power of those who control the discourse and the oppression of those with “dual” or “multiple” identities. Using Asians as a case example, I argue that the lack of published articles about Asians in contemporary gay and lesbian social service literature is the result of the different worldviews of Asian and White queers. However, this deficiency is sustained by social structures that are saturated with White middle/upper-class values. Implications of this situation and some directions for social change are discussed.     

On Probabilistic Proofs of Certain Binomial Identities

This short note gives a simple statistical proof of a binomial identity, by evaluating the Laplace transform of the maximum of n independent exponential random variables in two different ways. As a by-product, we obtain a rigorous proof of an interesting result concerning the exponential distribution. The connections between a probabilistic approach and our approach are discussed. In the process, several new binomial identities are also obtained.     

The gender of bruising: A critical literature review on gender in boxing

This article provides a critical review of the scholarship on gender in boxing since the formal recognition of women's boxing internationally in 1994. The article is divided into three parts, each addressing a different aspect of the relationship between gender and boxing. The first part discusses the beginnings of boxing scholarship that mostly focussed on men and masculinity, the second part explores the research on boxing since the inclusion of female boxing in international competitions and examines organizational aspects of boxing, and the last part outlines the scholarship that explores gender identities in boxing. The review is based on qualitative textual analysis and attempts to identify gaps in the scholarship, providing suggestions for future research directions. Overall, the article argues that while the scholarship on gender in boxing is saturated, there are still a few areas that would benefit from further research. These are studies on the relationship between volunteering, refereeing, heterosexuality, and gender in boxing.
