Minority Stress,Emotion Regulation,and the Parenting of Sexual-Minority Youth

ABSTRACT

Despite increasing societal acceptance of sexual-minority individuals, there are still gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB) adolescents who experience negative mental health outcomes. Minority stress theory posits that stigma-related stress associated with sexual-minority status drives increased risk among GLB individuals. Furthermore, recent evidence suggests that minority stress impacts emotion regulation (ER), identified as a particularly important risk factor for sexual-minority youth (SMY). Current research has identified some aspects of parenting contribute to GLB youth's mental health. We review the literature in these areas, and also integrate research from the broader developmental field on families and emotion socialization in order to identify the need for studies of parenting that go beyond existing data on parental acceptance and supportiveness of youth's sexual orientation. Limitations of the current literature and directions for future research are discussed, with specific focus on implications for interventions with SMY and their families.     

“Why I Can't Stand Out in Front of My House?”: Street‐Identified Black Youth and Young Adult's Negative Encounters With Police

This street participatory action research (Street PAR) study organized 15 residents to document street‐identified Black youth and adult's negative experiences with police in Wilmington, Delaware. Data were collected on mostly street‐identified Black men and women aged 18–35 in the forms of (1) 520 surveys, (2) 24 individual interviews, (3) four dual interviews, (4) three group interviews, and (5) extensive field observations. Forty‐two percent of survey participants reported being stopped by police in the last year. However, with the exception of being “stopped,” participants overall reported little negative contact with police at least within the past year. Chi‐square and ANOVA analyses suggest an interactional relationship exists between race, gender, and age on experiences with police. Younger Black men (18–21) were found to have the most negative contact with police. Analysis suggests a smaller, more hardened mostly male variant of the larger street community has had repeated contact with police. Qualitative analysis reveals at least two major themes: (1) disrespect and disdain for residents and (2) low motivation for working with police. Street PAR methodology was also found to be instrumental in working with local residents and the Wilmington Police Department to improve conditions between residents and police.     

Gendered Movement: Negotiating Youth,Sex and Harm in the US Carceral State

Exempt from the current bipartisan reassessment of the US carceral state are people with convictions for sex offenses. While movements against public registries for sex offenders are scant, a grassroots movement is underway. This article offers a preliminary analysis of the complex consequence of women's political work to extract their sons from the US carceral state. This gendered advocacy is mapped against shifts in the racialised US criminal justice system, where the fluid category of child/juvenile is often unavailable to youth of colour and/or queer youth, and criminalisation is offered to regulate sexuality, consent, age and potential harm.     

Fighting with Oneself to Maintain the Interaction Order: A Sociological Approach to Self‐Injury Daily Process

This article proposes an interactionist approach to self‐injury behavior in youth. Mostly based on in‐depth interviews with seventy people who self‐harm or who have self‐harmed at some point in their lives, it describes the process of daily self‐injuring. It shows that this practice consists less in the self‐harm in itself than in a liminal emotional state, composed of several successive steps, and that self‐injury makes sense because concerned individuals subjectively see it as the most practical of known activities for releasing emotional troubles, then maintaining the interaction order surrounding them.     

论党的青年成才观之发展进程

随着中国革命、建设、改革的发展,党引导青年成才和发挥青年才能的思想实践,也不断发展演变。国民革命时期,党的青年成才观开始萌芽。土地革命、抗日战争、解放战争时期,党的青年成才观逐步成熟,并得到有效运用。社会主义革命和建设时期,党的青年成才观开始转型。＂文化大革命＂和徘徊时期,党的青年成才观被扭曲。改革开放后,党的青年成才观得以回归和进一步升华。实践证明,当党的青年成才观正确时,青年就进步,党的事业就发展;当党的青年成才观偏差时,青年就走上曲折发展道路。     

信息全球化对当代中国青年价值观影响的思考

国际互联网的发展与普及,带来了信息全球化。本文从宏观上分析了信息全球化对于青年价值观的双重效应。一方面,有利于青年全球价值观的形成;有利于青年多元开放文化精神的形成;有利于青年主体意识的增强。另一方面,使青年意识形态西化;民族认同感弱化;价值取向和道德评价相对化。     

Implementing an Ally Development Model to Promote Safer Schools for LGB Youth: A Trans-Disciplinary Approach

Lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) students experience ongoing bullying, harassment, and lack of safety in school. Specialized instructional support personnel (SISPs), such as school counselors, school social workers, and school psychologists, are in a unique position to advocate for LGB students and to implement an ally development model. The purpose of this article is to describe the current climate for LGB students, to discuss the current barriers facing SISPs in advocating for change, and to provide a model of ally development for use at each level of the K–12 system.     

Incorporating human sexuality content into a positive youth development framework: Implications for community prevention

As approaches to positive youth development (PYD) gain momentum, the issue of sexuality – a critical component of human development – is being subsumed by ideological debates. In the current political climate, sexuality education is often relegated to biological and/or values-based approaches, neglecting essential relational and collective aspects of sexuality. Through the explication of sexuality as an important component of youth's social ecology, this paper provides a conceptual link between the goals of the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States' (SIECUS) Guidelines for comprehensive sexuality education and those of PYD. We argue that sexuality, as a normative part of human development, culture, identity, and relationships, be approached from an asset-based perspective, rather than a deficit-based perspective. We propose a framework that illustrates how aspects of sexuality are embedded within PYD contexts, and demonstrates how a sexuality education program rooted in SIECUS guidelines can further PYD goals across community contexts.     

The potential of a couples approach to employment assistance: results of a nonexperimental evaluation

We present findings from a nonexperimental evaluation of an employment program in which both partners in young, low-income, primarily African-American couples simultaneously participated. Mothers participating in the couples program had larger immediate gains in employment and earnings and decreases in TANF receipt following their exit from the program relative to mothers who received employment assistance as individuals. Fathers showed similar although weaker results. These immediate benefits appeared to be driven by higher rates of program completion among couples’ participants. Couples in which both partners completed the program experienced the largest quarterly earnings gains, and couples with greater earnings’ gains were more likely to still be together one year after the program ended. Mothers’ earnings gains eroded in the two years following program completion and many reported new pregnancies and problems with child care. We suggest directions for future programs and encourage future studies to consider the range of mechanisms associated with a couples focus, including potential motivational benefits and unintended consequences.

朱德发从人类视野探讨了集体英雄与个体英雄相互依存的辩证关系,在精神意识深层开掘了集体英雄和个体英雄的灵魂构成,认为英雄既有个性主义意识又有集体主义思想,二者并非对立而是有机统一的。王寰鹏认为,梁晓声知青小说的英雄主义既带有浓重的历史印记又体现了人性的本能,歌颂英雄主义和反思历史是梁晓声知青小说中同时存在的价值追求。李宗刚认为,“十七年”文学英雄叙事是中国革命这一宏大历史的缩影,其中隐喻着中国革命在艰难曲折中最终走向更伟大的胜利;同时,英雄叙事还契合了主流意识形态的需求,满足了主流意识形态时“个人魅力型权力”的眷恋。李钧从英雄性格入手,比较了《犯人李铜钟的故事》与《天下荒年》这两篇小说的英雄观及其文化哲学的差异。张伟忠通过对《人间正道》和《抉择》中的改革英雄形象的艺术分析,认为他们身上既有对传统君子型英雄人格优秀品质的继承,也有对当代改革英雄品质的发扬光大。改革英雄的人格结构并不全是现代性的,其中还有权威人格和长官意志等传统人格负面因素的残留。杨新刚认为,20世纪90年代以来的英雄叙事小说具有如下特征:从“英雄的人”向“人的英雄”的转进;英雄类型的世俗化和当代性;游走在主旋律与消费主义之间的叙事策略;由反传奇性向生活化叙事抵达等。
