“To Be Recorded in History”: Researching Iranian Underground Political Activists in Exile

This paper contains ethnographic reflections on my research among Iranian leftists in exile. I discuss challenges of fieldwork and in-depth interviewing about sensitive topics. I particularly emphasize the dynamics of gaining interviewees' trust in a community concerned about political ramifications of revealing personal and organizational secrets. In this respect, I underline the complications of researching and representing a defeated movement. I also write about the gender implications of my research—a male feminist researching the gender dynamics of revolution and the changing sexual politics of revolutionary collectivities in Iran and abroad. Finally, I raise issues concerning doing sociology in translation.     

论网络穿越小说对青少年心理健康的影响

近年来,穿越时空这类文学作品借助网络这一平台迅速走红,成为21世纪以来最引人注目的大众文学题材之一。穿越小说大多融汇历史、言情与玄幻等多种元素于一体,讲述穿越时空的＂爱情故事＂,由于其浓郁的梦幻色彩,受到了青少年特别是女性读者的青睐。在一定程度上,＂穿越＂像一场华丽而旖旎的＂心灵旅程＂,以白日梦的形式起到了舒缓现实世界压力的作用。但是,从＂穿越＂的风靡走红,也折射出了当今青少年世界的一些现象,如偏执的世界观和视角、对现实的迷失及幻灭感、＂拒绝长大＂的逃避倾向、严重的功利主义以及拜金主义等,穿越小说折射出来的社会问题及其对青少年心理健康产生的影响不容忽视,需要教育工作者以及社会各方面积极关注并加以适当引导。

SUMMARY

As a cultural approach to LGBT activism, media advocacy, such as that modeled by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), has grown in importance in the last decade. Drawing on the tactics used to educate the media about national anti-gay defamation issues, GLAAD has recently launched “AM/FM Activism,” an online resource that provides local activists with the tools necessary for responding to defamation in their own communities. Based on participant observation, in-depth interviews, and archival research, this article explores the implications of “AM/FM Activism” as a new form of media advocacy that bridges the gap between national and local activists.

From concept to data: sleuthing social change-oriented youth voices on YouTube

The idea of youth voice has become commonplace in youth studies and advocacy, although its meaning is more often assumed than explicitly defined and critically analyzed. This article engages with the concept of youth voice through a discussion of how we designed and implemented a pilot study on social change-oriented videos produced and circulated by Canadian teens on YouTube. We discuss the challenges and issues we encountered while attempting to constitute our research sample of youth-produced videos. In our sleuthing process, we grappled with the limitations of online search engines for our research purposes, and as a result developed a purposeful, tactical and adaptive approach. Throughout this process, we found that technical and practical issues evoked ethical concerns regarding youth voice as well, which thus required constant decision-making. As we report on how we dealt with these issues, we contribute to ongoing discussions and debates on youth voice occurring at the intersection of critical youth studies, social media, and online research ethics.     

“Platonic relationships” in China's online social milieu: a lubricant for banal everyday life?

This article focuses on how the term “Platonic relationships” is used by Chinese Internet users when discussing online relationships. The study relies primarily on personal narratives of online relationships, opinions provided by members of several domestic social sites, and an online survey. Used in the Chinese online context, “Platonic relationships” can refer to exclusively Internet-based relationships, but with no implication of seeking for the Cartesian self. Playing with “Platonic relationships” by containing the relationships online symbolizes an act of defiance against the ordinarization of enchanting and engrossing online affections by banal, everyday life. Chinese netizens strategically exploit the Internet to fulfill their emotional needs in order to improve the quality of their daily life.
