Intersectionality in Gender Mainstreaming:Equity Organizing in Turkey

ABSTRACT

Historically, Turkey is home to multiple identities and cultures. In following with the critiques of Diversity Mainstreaming approach toward Gender Mainstreaming, this article argues that recognition of identities can be possible if an intersectional approach is adopted. To overcome the particular challenges of Gender Mainstreaming’s implementation in Turkey’s multicultural society, this article introduces a concept that supplements Gender Mainstreaming, called Equity Organizing, which further develops the views on intersectionality and equity that Diversity Mainstreaming proposes. It is different from Diversity Mainstreaming because it seeks to address the challenges to democracy in strong central and authoritarian leaning states. Equity Organizing is committed to the construction of progressive state policies for social justice through the realization of diverse identities.

Urvashi Vaid is a community organizer and writer active in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) and social justice movements for over three decades. She is currently Director of the Engaging Tradition Project at the Center for Gender and Sexuality Law at Columbia University Law School. She is founder of LPAC, the first lesbian political action committee, and sits on the Board of Directors of the Gill Foundation. Vaid's past positions include Executive Director of the Arcus Foundation, Deputy Director of Governance and Civil Society Unit for the Ford Foundation, Executive Director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, and staff attorney for the ACLU National Prison Project. She is author of the books Irresistible Revolution: Confronting Race, Class and The Assumptions of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Politics, and Virtual Equality: The Mainstreaming of Gay & Lesbian Liberation, and co-editor of the book Creating Change: Public Policy, Sexuality and Civil Rights. Urvashi has had thyroid cancer and stage III breast cancer.     

动态的组织能力及其生成机制探析

动态能力理论的提出与企业对持续竞争优势的追求直接相关,对动态能力的生成机制及其组织要求的探讨有助于研究企业持续竞争优势的来源。通过对核心能力、动态能力与动态竞争优势等概念的辨析,可以得出动态能力本质上是动态的组织能力这一命题。动态的组织能力的生成或培养需要企业构建适应动态竞争要求的组织机制,而这种组织机制至少由环境感知机制、学习吸收机制和资源整合机制三部分构成。

案例教学法作为讲授式教学法的辅助方法,在法学教学中得以普及。针对案例教学法实施过程中出现的流于形式、教学效果良莠不齐等问题,可采取明确案例教学法地位、创造案例教学实施条件、遵循合理的组织过程、科学测评案例教学效果等解决方案。     

信息组织能力与二语写作质量的提高

本文从韩礼德系统功能语言学理论的角度出发,分析了大学生二语写作中时常出现的语篇思想统一性不高、连贯性不强、语句堆积的问题, 认为这些问题是由于写作者只注重语言的概念功能和人际功能, 忽视语言的谋篇功能而造成的.本文指出, 在写作教学中应该加强对学生信息组织能力的培养, 引导他们通过主位系统,信息系统和衔接系统更好地实现语篇功能.由此证明了懂得主位述位的基本理论有利于实现语篇的思想统一性,了解语篇的基本推进模式有利于实现语篇的连贯性,了解语篇的信息性有利于实现语篇的简洁经济性.     

Local–global linkages: Challenges in organizing functional communities for ecosocial justice

ABSTRACT

Communities face “glocalized” ecosocial problems. Functional Community Organization bridges local problems with globalized issues, organizes community, and meets need. Models describe glocal linkages and their outcomes, but little is known of processes and challenges in organizing. This article qualitatively explores ecosocial organizing challenges in a Community Technology Center in a US city, which organized around e-waste and digital inequality. Findings indicate that Functional Communities may face challenges in organizing aims due to complexities in balancing need while concurrently addressing global problems and issues in structure, funding, and process. This may be mitigated through communication, focus, self-awareness, and reflexivity.

“We’re Who We’ve Been Waiting For”: Intergenerational Community Organizing for a Healthy Community

This study, guided by principles of community-based participatory research (CBPR), presents the processes, challenges, and effects of intergenerational community organizing practice of a local grassroots organization to promote community health in multiracial and historically marginalized communities. Three major lessons emerged: (1) the central role of experiential communal learning and critical analysis in collective knowledge creation, (2) development of collective efficacy through a genuine sense of connection and mutual affirmation, and 3) the importance of a co-learner stance in fostering intergenerational leadership. The interconnection between process and product is emphasized as the central tenet in both community organizing and CBPR processes.     

The Great Flood of 1993: Response and Recovery in Five Communities

Abstract

In 1993, the Midwest endured a “one-hundred year flood.” Although aid was available from public and private sources, some communities were much less successful than others in obtaining assistance and resources. This study contrasts response and recovery from the flood in five communities. The study was initiated by 22 undergraduate students of social work community practice. Data sources include formal interviews with 58 flooded-out residents and 10 community leaders, as well as informal conversations and observations in the five communities. Immediate assistance in the response phase was available in all communities, but recovery varied considerably across the five. Findings focus on the importance of consensus on recovery goals, presence of local leaders and local organizations, socioeconomic resources, and political “voice.” The article discusses implications for community social work in post-disaster situations, including the importance of basic organization, advocacy skills, and understanding household and community economics.
