Equity in sustainable development: Community responses to environmental gentrification

Sustainable development aims to address economic, social, and environmental imperatives; yet, in practice, it often embodies a neoliberal market logic that reinforces inequalities. Thus, as the social work profession grapples with its role in advancing environmental sustainability, practice models must explicitly attend to social and economic justice. For example, environmental gentrification refers to situations in which the cleanup of contaminated land or the installation of environmental amenities intentionally or unintentionally catalyzes increased housing costs, thereby contributing to the displacement of vulnerable residents. With the goal of contributing to practice knowledge, we conducted a systematic review of peer‐reviewed articles (1997?2017) to learn how community groups have responded to the threat of environmental gentrification. We found that community organizations employ a range of strategies, including blocking development, negotiating for protections, planning alternatives, and allying with gentrifiers. We conclude by exploring ethical implications and practice principles to help social workers engage in truly sustainable development. Key Practitioner Message: ? The term environmental gentrification describes situations where improvements to environmental quality increase real estate prices, contributing to the displacement of vulnerable residents; ? An environmental justice framework attending to procedural, distributional, and recognition‐based claims provides a model for social work practice; ? Opportunities exist for social workers to take an intersectional rather than siloed approach to integrate economic, social, and environmental concerns.

在近现代东北地区高等教育史上占有重要地位的民国中共东北大学是东北师范大学的四个最直接的前身学校之一,它曾经历过两次筹办、建校及建校初期的多次易地迁址的复杂历史演变过程.由于该校诞生于激烈的国共内战时期,频繁转移造成原始的建校历史档案严重缺失和集体记忆的混乱和错位,导致对其筹建和成立等重大历史时间的记载出现严重的疏漏和舛误.根据翔实的历史文献进行考证,可证明中共中央东北局是建立中共东北大学的第一责任者,1946年3月13日是该校的创立日,江华、凯丰、舒群、张松如等四人是决定学校筹建、定名、成立、迁校的关键性人物.     

中外“非营利组织（NPOs）”的组织形态对比与借鉴

＂非营利组织（NPOs）＂是一种不同于公营部门也有别于私营部门的全新组织。不同国度的非营利组织表现出不同的发展形态和组织方式。我国的非营利组织种类繁杂、名称众多,且组织形式、管理模式五花八门,现行制度不利于我国非营利组织的发展,必须为非营利组织进行全盘规划,探讨与非营利组织的组织形式相适应的管理模式。     

Community Organizing with Women of Color:

The problems of women of color are related to gender, ethnic, and class inequality, yet little attention has been paid to methods for changing these structural conditions; most social work literature on gender and ethnicity has focused on individual models for change. Recent research on feminist organizing has identified ways in which community organization methods can be made more effective for use with groups of women. The implementation of these methods with women of color, however, will require addressing deficiencies of feminist theory in analyzing women's experience. This article presents one approach to organizing with women of color that suggests how race and gender issues can be worked on simultaneously. The issues and practice principles are relevant for both women of color and European American women organizing in communities of color.     

Building a youth-led movement to keep young people out of the adult criminal justice system

Through the lens of the Youth Art & Self-empowerment Project (YASP), this article explores the impact that the adult criminal justice system has on young people and how young men and women in Philadelphia are organizing to challenge that system. YASP has developed an innovative model for supporting and training young people in Philadelphia's adult jails and recently released from the adult jails to build a youth-led movement to repeal adult transfer laws in Pennsylvania. Through stories of personal experience and collective struggle, this chapter illustrates the power of young people taking back control of their city, their state, and their own destinies.     

The Interweaving of Community Intervention Approaches

This article presents the updated and revised version of the three pronged model of community intervention--locality development, social action, and social planning/policy--introduced in the first edition of Strategies of Community Intervention (1968). It provides a recent elaboration of that model into a paradigm of community intervention that illustrates the interweaving of the basic models and the types of interventions that result from the mixed forms. Dilemmas inherent in each core model are analyzed.

Twilight's Children

The following article describes conditions in South Africa just as the "dismantling of apartheid" was beginning in earnest at the start of this decade. Thus it provides something of a baseline by which to compare changes which have taken place in that country since then. However, its greater contribution may be its evocation of the atmosphere of the time. As such it provides a unique perspective and a useful addition to the historical record of South African social welfare as well as a testament to those who struggled and continue to struggle to serve the nation's children.     

Tagging Walls and Planting Seeds: Creating Spaces for Youth Civic Action

Youth civic spaces are environments in which youth participation in civic action is fostered—the pathways, structures, and vehicles that provide opportunities for young people to engage in critical discussion, dialogue, and action. The concept of youth civic space includes the formal and informal places in which youth civic engagement can occur and how the lived experience of those places contributes to young people's development as civic actors. It extends discussions regarding the physical locations of youth civic engagement to include the activities, perceptions, and interactions within them. Drawing on archival materials from 2 multiyear projects, this article explores the role of community-based organizations in mediating youth civic action and understanding the characteristics and qualities of the organizations that facilitate youth engagement in community action and social change. We use this analysis of empirical examples to develop a conceptual framework for strengthening practice.
