Reflections at the Waterhole: Black Professionals Researching Together

This paper tells the story of how I came to understanding my practice and my research by means of a metaphor, that of the waterhole. I demonstrate how the ideas contained below have great resonances with the concept of practice nearness. In the process I recount the story of my reflective practices and my research with other black professionals to inquire into our experiences in white organisations and to give voice to our lived experiences.

Power of the First Hour

Abstract

In 2012, the NGO Save the Children launched its No Child Born to Die campaign with the tagline, “Breastfeeding Saves Lives.” The press release explains that in the first hours and days after a baby is born, their mother produces colostrum, a substance known to improve immunity, which must be delivered to infants in the first sixty minutes of life; this is referred to as “the power of the first hour.” Invoking a sense of urgency and a crisis of infant mortality, which breastfeeding is positioned to resolve, the campaign cites staggering medical statistics of infant deaths in the campaign targets of Africa, Asia and Latin America, and also Northern Indigenous and Inuit reserves in Canada. More than misrepresenting racialized women in the developed world as uneducated on infant health, childcare and child rearing and as lacking agency and empowerment, the campaign mobilizes the erroneous conflation of medical science, morality, capitalism and public health – a linkage typically mobilized by the development industry to the detriment of globally marginalized women. In order to understand how this conflation is mobilized to manufacture crisis at the expense of examining the root causes of infant mortality globally, we collect theories of crisis temporalities to develop a “feminist politics of crisis.”     

‘La Lenin is my passport’: schooling,mobility and belonging in socialist Cuba and its diaspora

Based on an ethnographic study of transnational networks of alumni of an academically selective boarding school in Havana, this article explores the nexus between mobility, schooling and belonging in the context of socialist Cuba and its diaspora. Drawing on Goffman’s work, I argue that the boarding school experience was transformative; it facilitated or consolidated social mobility for its pupils, which later, for many, led to geographic mobility in the form of study and work outside Cuba. After graduating, alumni continue to identify with the school and to reproduce their alumni identities. The affective webs of belonging forged through family links and friendships fostered at the school constitute emotionally sustaining networks that also provide material support after migrating. I propose that the school represents a site of identification for a globally dispersed non-national diaspora and argue that migration scholars need to embed international migration within people’s lives more broadly.

要素跨国流动与比较优势变形:实证与理论拓展

比较优势理论是国际贸易理论的基石。通过考察"金砖国家"外资流入与显性比较优势指数变化,发现两者存在正相关性。在全球化经济下,对比较优势的把握应深入到要素层面,即要素质量、数量和要素组合共同决定比较优势。要素跨国流动对要素价格、质量、组合以及规模经济形成产生影响进而影响比较优势,由此,中国应立足提升要素质量的规划,参与全球化经济。     

外资在华跨国并购的发展趋势分析

随着经济全球化和全球信息化的加快,跨国公司对外直接投资迅猛发展,规模急剧扩大,境外投资方式也从原来的以新建投资为主转变为兼并收购为主。但是,由于种种原因,跨国公司在华并购仍然处于较低水平。本文对外资在华并购的现状和投资环境做了分析,并对未来一段时期国外跨国公司在华并购的趋势做了预测。

全世界跨国公司为了实现其全球化战略开始了大规模的跨国并购 ,跨国并购已成为对外直接投资的重要形式。与此同时跨国并购理论也得到了很大的发展。企业并购的一般理论、对外直接投资理论、跨国并购理论构成跨国并购实践和理论研究的支撑 ;跨国并购理论还不完善 ,还有很多问题需要研究和解决     

欧洲跨区域性公共部门服务绩效评奖机制研究与启示

公共服务的质量与创新是当今国内外政府部门与公共管理学界热烈关注讨论的议题，不少国家地区通过设置相关奖项，来鼓励公共部门提升与创新服务质量。在整合下的欧洲大陆，由欧洲公共管理学院所主办的欧洲公共部门服务奖，是一项完全针对公共部门所设置的跨区域性奖项，以欧洲公共部门服务奖为切人点，从评价标准、活动特色等各方面来探讨，应该对于我国公共部门在服务促进的工作上，提供有益的参考与借鉴。     

Local press meets transnational activism: news dynamics in an anti‐WTO protest

Transnational protests often involve a cross‐cultural encounter between “foreign” protesters and the local media and public, whose repertoires of contentious practices and discourses may differ. Examining how transnational and local actors interact in these events is one way to understand the significance and impact of transnational activism. At the same time, local media coverage of transnational protests can also be analyzed as such a cross‐cultural encounter. Following these premises, this article examines Hong Kong media coverage of the transnational protests during the World Trade Organization's 6th Ministerial Conference, which was held in the city in December 2005. The analysis focuses particularly on how this non‐routine news event provided the conditions for a more reflective interactive dynamics between the protesters and journalists, which contributed to emergence of media discourses negotiating and redefining the existing cultural understanding of protest actions. However, the case study also shows the limits regarding how far the redefinition and negotiation can go. Theoretical implications of the analysis are discussed.
