Model selection using information criteria under a new estimation method: least squares ratio

In this study, we evaluate several forms of both Akaike-type and Information Complexity (ICOMP)-type information criteria, in the context of selecting an optimal subset least squares ratio (LSR) regression model. Our simulation studies are designed to mimic many characteristics present in real data – heavy tails, multicollinearity, redundant variables, and completely unnecessary variables. Our findings are that LSR in conjunction with one of the ICOMP criteria is very good at selecting the true model. Finally, we apply these methods to the familiar body fat data set.     

Topics on Dynamic Panel Data Models with Random Effects Using Semi-Parametric Bayesian Approach

A common assumption in fitting panel data models is normality of stochastic subject effects. This can be extremely restrictive, making vague most potential features of true distributions. The objective of this article is to propose a modeling strategy, from a semi-parametric Bayesian perspective, to specify a flexible distribution for the random effects in dynamic panel data models. This is addressed here by assuming the Dirichlet process mixture model to introduce Dirichlet process prior for the random-effects distribution. We address the role of initial conditions in dynamic processes, emphasizing on joint modeling of start-up and subsequent responses. We adopt Gibbs sampling techniques to approximate posterior estimates. These important topics are illustrated by a simulation study and also by testing hypothetical models in two empirical contexts drawn from economic studies. We use modified versions of information criteria to compare the fitted models.     

Inference after separated hypotheses testing: an empirical investigation for linear models

Model selection problems arise while constructing unbiased or asymptotically unbiased estimators of measures known as discrepancies to find the best model. Most of the usual criteria are based on goodness-of-fit and parsimony. They aim to maximize a transformed version of likelihood. For linear regression models with normally distributed error, the situation is less clear when two models are equivalent: are they close to or far from the unknown true model? In this work, based on stochastic simulation and parametric simulation, we study the results of Vuong's test, Cox's test, Akaike's information criterion, Bayesian information criterion, Kullback information criterion and bias corrected Kullback information criterion and the ability of these tests to discriminate between non-nested linear models.     

构建跨文化传播的伦理规范——以中国香港与大陆一起文化冲突事件为例

摘 自香港回归以来,大陆与香港同胞的交流合作愈加紧密。但由于文化的差异,交际中难免产生误解。加上大众媒体在传播中缺乏伦理导向、对两地文化缺乏深入理解,更容易激发矛盾。文章以哈贝马斯的交往行为理论为框架,并结合跨文化交际学和传播学的理论指导,分析2012年初发生的一起两地文化冲突事件,提倡在“建立共识、促进改变和巩固社会的公众空间”中理性交流,并在宏观文化层面确立一种具有多元化、开放性和主体间性的跨文化伦理。     

高校辅导员队伍职业化建设的内涵标准

我国高校辅导员队伍职业化建设,既缺少可供学习借鉴的典型经验,也没有可供参照的现成标准。本文着眼于我国高校辅导员队伍职业化建设的社会要求和个人期待,从人员专业化、工作程序化、岗位结构化、发展多元化、管理学术化等五个方面,就辅导员队伍职业化建设的内涵标准进行了理论上的探讨和设计。

大学生人生价值观教育中的规范性与个体发展性之间是辩证统一的关系.然而在现实教育的实践中,却存在着片面强调规范性,忽视个体发展性的倾向,从而导致了一些不良现象的产生.树立现代化德育理念,培养和塑造大学生人生价值观的主体意识,就是要将规范性与个体发展性之间的张力转化为锻造大学生正确人生价值观的合力.     

Bootstrap estimation and model selection for multivariate normal mixtures using parallel computing with graphics processing units

In applications of multivariate finite mixture models, estimating the number of unknown components is often difficult. We propose a bootstrap information criterion, whereby we calculate the expected log-likelihood at maximum a posteriori estimates for model selection. Accurate estimation using the bootstrap requires a large number of bootstrap replicates. We accelerate this computation by employing parallel processing with graphics processing units (GPUs) on the Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) platform. We conducted a runtime comparison of CUDA algorithms between implementation on the GPU and that on a CPU. The results showed significant performance gains in the proposed CUDA algorithms over multithread CPUs.     

Exploring rigour in autoethnographic research

Abstract

The changing face of qualitative research has opened up discourses on the validity and rigour of research processes and products. A current debate is whether the criteria traditionally used to judge the rigour of quantitative research are appropriate to assess the academic integrity of qualitative research including autoethnography. The purpose of this article is to appraise views on the academic rigour, validity and scientific accountability of research in general and autoethnographic research in particular. The researcher reports on issues of rigour in conducting autoethnographic research from her own experience and that of published autoethnographic researchers. The issue of relevant appraisal criteria against which the research integrity and rigour of autoethnographic studies can be assessed is investigated. It is concluded that the academic rigour of autoethnographic studies should be established to enhance its credibility and value and that the criteria used need to be judiciously determined and applied.     

How old is old? Revising the definition based on life table criteria

Sixty‐five has long been thought of as the point of entry into “old age.”; We propose a number of life table criteria for answering the following questions: If 65 was considered appropriate four decades ago, what is the corresponding age today? If 65 was (implicitly) a male‐oriented definition four decades ago, as we believe it was, what would have been the appropriate definition for women at that time, and what is it today? We address these questions by applying our criteria to Canada, using 1951 and 1991 life tables, but the criteria could be applied equally well to other countries. For other developed countries we would expect broadly similar results.
