Statistical inference in the wavelet domain remains a vibrant area of contemporary statistical research because of desirable properties of wavelet representations and the need of scientific community to process, explore, and summarize massive data sets. Prime examples are biomedical, geophysical, and internet related data. We propose two new approaches to wavelet shrinkage/thresholding. In the spirit of Efron and Tibshirani's recent work on local false discovery rate, we propose Bayesian Local False Discovery Rate (BLFDR), where the underlying model on wavelet coefficients does not assume known variances. This approach to wavelet shrinkage is shown to be connected with shrinkage based on Bayes factors. The second proposal, Bayesian False Discovery Rate (BaFDR), is based on ordering of posterior probabilities of hypotheses on true wavelets coefficients being null, in Bayesian testing of multiple hypotheses. We demonstrate that both approaches result in competitive shrinkage methods by contrasting them to some popular shrinkage techniques. 相似文献

Statistical control charts are often used in industry to monitor processes in the interests of quality improvement. Such charts assume independence and normality of the control statistic, but these assumptions are often violated in practice. To better capture the true shape of the underlying distribution of the control statistic, we utilize the g-and-k distributions to estimate probability limits, the true ARL, and the error in confidence that arises from incorrectly assuming normality. A sensitivity assessment reveals that the extent of error in confidence associated with control chart decision-making procedures increases more rapidly as the distribution becomes more skewed or as the tails of the distribution become longer than those of the normal distribution. These methods are illustrated using both a frequentist and computational Bayesian approach to estimate the g-and-k parameters in two different practical applications. The Bayesian approach is appealing because it can account for prior knowledge in the estimation procedure and yields posterior distributions of parameters of interest such as control limits. 相似文献

Problems involving bounded parameter spaces, for example T-minimax and minimax esyimation of bounded parameters, have received much attention in recent years. The existing literature is rich. In this paper we consider T-minimax estimation of a multivariate bounded normal mean by affine rules, and discuss the loss of efficiency due to the use of such rules instead of optimal, unrestricted rules. In this article, we propose a simple alternative model to analyze the volatility of the financial time series. In the applications, the performance of this model is compared with the performance of the GARCH type models. Using GARCH, EGARCH, and the proposed models, we analyze the time series of the Bovespa and Dow Jones Industrial Average indexes. The linear discriminant function (LDF) is known to be optimal in the sense of achieving an optimal error rate when sampling from multivariate normal populations with equal covariance matrices. Use of the LDF in nonnormal situations is known to lead to some strange results. This paper will focus on an evaluation of misclassification probabilities when the power transformation could have been used to achieve at least approximate normality and equal covariance matrices in the sampled populations for the distribution of the observed random variables. We propose a fully Bayesian model with a non-informative prior for analyzing misclassified binary data with a validation substudy. In addition, we derive a closed-form algorithm for drawing all parameters from the posterior distribution and making statistical inference on odds ratios. Our algorithm draws each parameter from a beta distribution, avoids the specification of initial values, and does not have convergence issues. We apply the algorithm to a data set and compare the results with those obtained by other methods. Finally, the performance of our algorithm is assessed using simulation studies. 相似文献

The authors offer a unified method extending traditional spatial dependence with normally distributed error terms to a new class of spatial models based on the biparametric exponential family of distributions. Joint modeling of the mean and variance (or precision) parameters is proposed in this family of distributions, including spatial correlation. The proposed models are applied for analyzing Colombian land concentration, assuming that the variable of interest follows normal, gamma, and beta distributions. One way that has been used for identifying and estimating threshold autoregressive (TAR) models for nonlinear time series follows the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) approach via the Gibbs sampler. This route has major computational difficulties, specifically, in getting convergence to the parameter distributions. In this article, a new procedure for identifying a TAR model and for estimating its parameters is developed by following the reversible jump MCMC procedure. ABSTRACTIn this article, we propose a new distribution by mixing normal and Pareto distributions, and the new distribution provides an unusual hazard function. We model the mean and the variance with covariates for heterogeneity. Estimation of the parameters is obtained by the Bayesian method using Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithms. Proposal distribution in MCMC is proposed with a defined working variable related to the observations. Through the simulation, the method shows a dependable performance of the model. ABSTRACTStandard prior elicitation procedures require experts to explicitly quantify their beliefs about parameters in the form of multiple summaries. In this article, we draw on recent advances in the statistical graphics and information visualization communities to propose a novel elicitation scheme that implicitly learns an expert’s opinions through their sequential selection of graphics of carefully constructed hypothetical future samples. While the scheme can be applied to a broad array of models, we use it to construct procedures for elicitation in data models commonly used in practice: Bernoulli, Poisson, and Normal.
