Monitoring two-stage processes with a profile at the second stage

In the multistage processes, quality of a process or a product at each stage is related to the previous stage(s). This property is referred to as a cascade property. Sometimes, quality of a process is characterized by a profile. In this paper, we consider a two-stage process with a normal quality characteristic in the first stage and a simple linear regression profile in the second stage. Then we propose two methods to monitor quality characteristics in both stages. The performance of the proposed two methods is evaluated through a numerical example in terms of average run length criterion.     

Slowing time: Markov-modulated Brownian motions with a sticky boundary

We define a new family of stochastic processes called Markov modulated Brownian motions with a sticky boundary at zero. Intuitively, each process is a regulated Markov-modulated Brownian motion whose boundary behavior is modified to slow down at level zero.

To determine the stationary distribution of a sticky MMBM, we follow a Markov-regenerative approach similar to the one developed with great success in the context of quasi-birth-and-death processes and fluid queues. Our analysis also relies on recent work showing that Markov-modulated Brownian motions arise as limits of a parametrized family of fluid queues.

Expectation maximization estimates of the offspring probabilities in a class of multitype branching processes with binary family trees

When proliferating cells are counted in several independent colonies at some time points, the maximum likelihood estimates of the parameters of the multitype branching process are obtained trough an expectation maximization algorithm. In the case of an offspring distribution governed by a Markov branching process with binary family trees, this method, relying then on a partial knowledge of the tree, yields the same estimates as those computed with the complete knowledge of the tree.     

Target setting for indirect processes: a new hybrid method for the continuous improvement management of indirect processes

Indirect processes are increasingly contributing to the total cost of production in highly competitive and technology-intensive industries. Unfortunately, they are less assessable than direct processes due to the complex organisational management structure. Therefore, companies seeking to make improvements in indirect areas need decision support methods to indicate which indirect process needs to be improved and to what extent. To facilitate this task, the target setting for indirect processes (TSIP) method has been developed following the constructive research approach. TSIP is a combination of process modelling, the analytic network process, activity-based management from managerial accounting research and the value control chart from target costing research in a kaizen budgeting framework. This new hybrid method is developed and validated in cooperation with a global first-tier automotive supplier.     

The Nature and Correlates of Sibling Influence in Two‐Parent African American Families

Guided by research and theory on sibling similarities and differences, this study explored the nature and correlates of 2 processes of sibling influence—social learning and sibling differentiation—during adolescence. Participants included 2 adolescent‐age siblings (M = 16.29 years for older siblings and M = 12.59 years for younger siblings, respectively) from 166 two‐parent African American families. Significant nonlinear associations between these two influence dynamics and some sibling relationship qualities were discovered. For sibling differentiation, but not social learning, these links were further moderated by gender composition of the sibling dyad. Additional analyses revealed that youths' reports of social learning were generally linked to smaller differences between siblings, whereas differentiation processes were linked to greater differences in siblings' individual characteristics.
