Enabling SMEs to take full advantage of e-business

Electronic business is rapidly changing the relationships between supply chain partners. This paper looks at what is needed to allow SMEs to participate fully in supply chain integration. First, current trends in supply chain integration, electronic commerce, and Internet support are examined. Next, the goals and results of a study are presented which addressed SME needs in fast moving consumer goods supply chains. These concepts are then integrated to determine a way forward for SMEs to participate in e-business. It is found that current Virtual Markets (web-sites or on-line communities that facilitate finding a buyer or seller and track orders) address some customer - supplier relationships but need many enhancements before they can support fully integrated supply chains.     

FORRIDGE - Principles of good practice in material flow

The post World War II Industrial Revolution has driven production away from the old 'economies of scale' to the new 'economies of scope'. Apparently Japanese led, the associated roots of present good practice on material flow can be traced back in the USA to Jay Forrester and in the UK to Jack Burbidge. Specifically, in the supply chain scenario, Forrester exposed the importance of system structure in relating and integrating information flow with material flow. Similarly Burbidge led the way in exploiting cycle time reduction, synchronization of orders throughout the chain, simplified product structures, and streamlined component flows. This paper unites their contributions to material flow engineering and shows how present day system design methodologies incorporate their ideas on best practice. These principles are particularly relevant to the product delivery process (PDP) which governs material flow in supply chains.     

Stock Returns and Expected Business Conditions: Half a Century of Direct Evidence

Using survey data, we characterize directly the impact of expected business conditions on expected excess stock returns. Expected business conditions consistently affect expected excess returns in a counter-cyclical fashion. Moreover, inclusion of expected business conditions in otherwise-standard predictive return regressions substantially reduce the explanatory power of the conventional financial predictors, including the dividend yield, default premium, and term premium, while simultaneously increasing R². Expected business conditions retain predictive power even when including the key nonfinancial predictor, the generalized consumption/wealth ratio. We argue that time-varying expected business conditions likely capture time-varying risk, whereas time-varying consumption/wealth may capture time-varying risk aversion.     

An Empirical Analysis of Backlog,Inventory, Production,and Price Adjustments: An Application of Recursive Systems of Log-Linear Models

This article presents an empirical analysis of firms' order backlogs, inventories, production, and price adjustments to unanticipated demand shocks. The data are obtained from quarterly INSEE Business Survey Tests on firms' realizations, expectations, and appraisals of some various economic variables. The analysis is based on the formulation and the estimation of a recursive system of conditional log-linear probability models.     

Revisiting management innovation and change programmes: strategic vision or tunnel vision?

The information systems (IS) and management literature, broadly conceived, is replete with management innovation and change programmes. All are designed to enhance business performance and competitive advantage. This paper examines five approaches which have been developed in the post-war period to improve business performance. They are Total Quality Management (TQM), Just-In-Time production management (JIT), Activity Based Costing (ABC), Business Process Re-engineering (BPR), and Process Innovation. By comparing and contrasting these approaches, it is found that considerable overlap exists in their scope, style, content, aims and objectives. In view of this, the paper argues that instead of re-inventing the wheel every few years with a new management innovation and change panacea or fad, a broader, inter-disciplinary perspective should be adopted which seeks to understand the wider ideological, historical and empirical perspective which underpins these ideas. This is instead of the tunnel vision approach which seeks only to place these ideas in a narrow organisational or managerial context.     

英语商务函电文本中的合作与礼貌原则——兼谈英语商务函电文本的词汇特征

本文讨论了英语商务函电文本在词汇选择方面的六个主要特色,分析了英语商务函电文本中合作原则和礼貌原则的关系。分析表明,在英语商务函电文本中,合作原则和礼貌原则并不是互相对立的,它们是相辅相成的。对于商务函电的交际者双方而言,合作是前提,礼貌是手段。为了达成合作,交际双方会在词汇选择方面采用一些策略,使得一些可能不礼貌的行为听起来较为合理。作者指出,在教学中,教师要注意引导学生认识商务英语函电的语言特色,切实提高学生的商务函电写作能力。     

利用信息技术实现券商经纪业务战略转型的策略研究

针对中国券商经纪业务进行经营模式转型的现实需要,本文提出了利用信息技术实现券商经纪业务战略转型的策略,论述了券商借助IT平台建设分步实现内部集成、业务流程再设计、业务网络再设计三层转型的过程,分析了在各阶段中相应IT平台的系统定位及在业务转型的角色、作用,进而揭示了一条券商基于信息技术实现经纪业务战略转型的途径。     

Intertemporal consumer behaviour under structural changes in income

In this paper we analyze models of forward looking consumer behaviour and give empirical evidence for aggregate quarterly data for the Netherlands, 1967-1984. Special attention is devoted to the implications of unanticipated structural changes in the income process, which because of replanning, will have an impact on the consumption decision. We start with the life cycle hypothesis. Since the fall in aggregate consumption in the Netherlands in the eighties can not be explained by the life cycle model, the theory is reformulated by assuming that the planning horizon of the consumers moves ahead as time goes on. As a result, an error correction mechanism has to be introduced in the consumption function.The modified model is found to be in agreement with the data.     

美国商业方法专利质量问题分析及对我国的启示

分析了产生商业方法专利质量问题的原因，介绍了美国《商业方法专利促进法》对于解决这一问题提出的方案，最后结合我国国情，指出我国采取商业方法专利保护模式的必要性并分析了在确立专利审查标准时需考虑的因素。
