This paper provides some simple methods of interpreting the coefficients in multinomial logit and ordered logit models. These methods are summarized in Propositions concerning the magnitudes, signs, and patterns of partial derivatives of the outcome probabilities with respect to the exogenousvariables. We study the influence of a single data case on the results of a statistical analysis. This problem has been addressed in several articles for linear discriminant analysis (LDA). Kernel Fisher discriminant analysis (KFDA) is a kernel based extension of LDA. In this article, we study the effect of atypical data points on KFDA and develop criteria for identification of cases having a detrimental effect on the classification performance of the KFDA classifier. We find that the criteria are successful in identifying cases whose omission from the training data prior to obtaining the KFDA classifier results in reduced error rates.  相似文献

We present full Bayesian analysis of finite mixtures of multivariate normals with unknown number of components. We adopt reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo and we construct, in a manner similar to that of Richardson and Green (1997), split and merge moves that produce good mixing of the Markov chains. The split moves are constructed on the space of eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the current covariance matrix so that the proposed covariance matrices are positive definite. Our proposed methodology has applications in classification and discrimination as well as heterogeneity modelling. We test our algorithm with real and simulated data.  相似文献

This is a comparative study of various clustering and classification algorithms as applied to differentiate cancer and non-cancer protein samples using mass spectrometry data. Our study demonstrates the usefulness of a feature selection step prior to applying a machine learning tool. A natural and common choice of a feature selection tool is the collection of marginal p-values obtained from t-tests for testing the intensity differences at each m/z ratio in the cancer versus non-cancer samples. We study the effect of selecting a cutoff in terms of the overall Type 1 error rate control on the performance of the clustering and classification algorithms using the significant features. For the classification problem, we also considered m/z selection using the importance measures computed by the Random Forest algorithm of Breiman. Using a data set of proteomic analysis of serum from ovarian cancer patients and serum from cancer-free individuals in the Food and Drug Administration and National Cancer Institute Clinical Proteomics Database, we undertake a comparative study of the net effect of the machine learning algorithm–feature selection tool–cutoff criteria combination on the performance as measured by an appropriate error rate measure.  相似文献

Neural networks are a popular machine learning tool, particularly in applications such as protein structure prediction; however, overfitting can pose an obstacle to their effective use. Due to the large number of parameters in a typical neural network, one may obtain a network fit that perfectly predicts the learning data, yet fails to generalize to other data sets. One way of reducing the size of the parmeter space is to alter the network topology so that some edges are removed; however it is often not immediately apparent which edges should be eliminated. We propose a data-adaptive method of selecting an optimal network architecture using a deletion/substitution/addition algorithm. Results of this approach to classification are presented on simulated data and the breast cancer data of Wolberg and Mangasarian [1990. This paper examines the tendency towards income convergence among China's main provinces during the two periods: the pre-reform period 1953-1977 and the reform period 1978-1997 using the framework of the Solow growth model. The panel data method accounts for not only province-specific initial technology level but also the heterogeneity of the technological progress rate between the fast-growing coastal and interior provinces. Estimation problems of weak instruments and endogeneity are addressed by the use of a system generalized method of moments (GMM) estimator. The main empirical finding is that there is a system-wide income divergence during the reform period because the coastal provinces do not share a common technology progress rate with the interior provinces.  相似文献

The paper states conditions for minimal variation within the explanatory variables such that the maximum likelihood estimate of the coefficient vector in the discrete choice logit model is unique. Special emphasis is given to the case that (almost) all individuals observe the same set of alternative-specific explanatory variables. This paper is concerned with the technique of numerically evaluating the cumulative distribution function of a quadratic form in normal variables. The efficiency of two new truncation bounds and all existing truncation bounds are investigated. We also find that the suggestion in the literature for further splitting truncation errors might reduce computational efficiency, and the optimum splitting rate could be different in different situations. A practical solution is provided. The paper also discusses a modified secant algorithm for finding the critical value of the distribution at any given significance level.  相似文献
