Estimation of Traffic Intensity Based on Queue Length in a Single M/M/1 Queue

In this article, maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) as well as Bayes estimator of traffic intensity (ρ) in an M/M/1/∞ queueing model in equilibrium based on number of customers present in the queue at successive departure epochs have been worked out. Estimates of some functions of ρ which provide measures of effectiveness of the queue have also been derived. A comprehensive simulation study starting with the transition probability matrix has been carried out in the last section.     

Two Conditionally Specified Mixed Binomial Distributions

Two generalized hypergeometric distributions are identified as mixed binomial distributions by conditional specification. Both distributions show profiles that are not possible in other mixed binomial distributions such as the beta-binomial distribution. A simulation study illustrates that beta-binomial distribution is more precise to fit data with usual profiles but the two distributions presented can improve the capability of fitting data in other less common scenes.     

Partial differential equations for hypergeometric functions 3F2 of matrix argument

Many multivariate non-null distributions and moment formulas can be expressed in terms of hypergeometric functions _pF_q of matrix arqument. Muirhead [6] and Constantine and Muirhead [2] gave partial differential equations for the functions of ₂F₁ of one argument matrix and two argument matrices, respectively. Such differential equations have been used to obtain asymptotic expansions of the functions (Muirhead [7], [8], [9], Sugiura [10]). The purpose of this paper is to derive partial differential equations for the functions ₃F₂ (a₁ a₂, a₃; b₁, b₂, R) and ₃F₂ (a₁, a₂, a₃; b₁, b₂; R, S). Differential equations for ₂F₂ are also obtained.     

On some formulas for weighted sum of invariant polynomials of two matrix arguments

Some properties of the generalized binomial coefficients and new coefficients related to symmetric functions are discussed. Several formulas of the weighted sum of invariant polynomials of two matrix arguments which are useful in multivariate distribution theory are presented.     

An alternative representation of noncentral beta and F distributions

In this paper the doubly noncentral beta and F distributions are represented alternatively by using the results on the product of two hypergeometric functions. Their moments and the cumulative distribution functions are also given in terms of hypergeometric functions, which can be easily calculated by the Mathematica package.     

A Note on Confidence Intervals for Proportions in Finite Populations

An exact confidence interval for the number or proportion of successes in a finite population is developed using the standard technique of inverting a family of tests. The resulting procedure is compared with two methods available in the sampling literature and is shown to be equivalent to one of the methods and superior to the other method.
