After the eastern enlargement of the European Union (EU) and due to increasing labor market integration, wage determination in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) has become a key issue in European economic policy making. In addition, a controversial discussion concerning the monetary integration of CEE countries into the EMU has emerged. Both issues have earned particular academic and political interest because Eastern and Western Europe are at different stages of economic development and volatile international capital flows seem to require either a higher degree of wage or exchange rate flexibility. Based on the Scandinavian model of wage adjustment by Lindbeck (1979), we analyze the role of exchange rates in the wage determination process of the Central and Eastern European countries to identify which exchange rate strategy contributes to faster wage convergence in Europe. Panel estimations suggest that workers in countries with fixed exchange rates are likely to benefit in the long run from higher wage increases. 相似文献

This paper provides a tool to build climate change scenarios to forecast Gross Domestic Product (GDP), modelling both GDP damage due to climate change and the GDP impact of mitigating measures. It adopts a supply-side, long-term view, with 2060 and 2100 horizons. It is a global projection tool (30 countries/regions), with assumptions and results both at the world and the country/regional level. Five different types of energy inputs are taken into account according to their CO2 emission factors. Full calibration is possible at each stage, with estimated or literature-based default parameters. Compared to other models, it provides a comprehensive modelisation of Total Factor Productivity (TFP), which is the most significant determinant of the GDP projected path. We present simulation results of different energy policy scenarios. They illustrate both the “tragedy of the horizon” and the “tragedy of the commons”, which call for a policy framework that adequately integrates a long run perspective, through a low-enough discount rate and an effective intergenerational solidarity as well as international cooperation. 相似文献

Using data from the US Current Population Surveys 2006-2008, I examine the weekly work hours of Mexican immigrants. Mexican immigrant workers on average work 2-4 h less than non-Hispanic whites per week, which contradicts the popular portrait of long immigrant work hours. Four mechanisms to explain this gap are proposed and examined. Results show that the work time disparity between non-Hispanic white and Mexican immigrant workers is explained by differences in human capital, ethnic concentration in the labor market, and selection process into employment. English proficiency has limited effect on work time after location in labor market is specified, while the effect of citizenship status remains robust. 相似文献

In this paper we study the occupational progress and earnings attainment of immigrants in Germany and compare them to native
Germans. Our analysis is guided by the human capital, segmented labor market, and discrimination theories. To assess the separate
effects of occupational segmentation and discrimination in the allocation of occupations and wages, we conceptualize the process
of earnings attainment as occurring in three stages: initial occupational achievement, final occupational achievement after
the accumulation of experience, and, contingent on the former, final earnings attainment. Our analysis of data from the German
Socioeconomic Panel suggests a high degree of initial occupational segmentation, with mmigrants being less able to translate
their human capital into a good first job than natives. We also find that immigrants experienced significant discrimination
in the process of occupational attainment, yielding little job mobility over time, and a widening of the status gap between
Germans and guestworkers. Holding occupational status constant, however, we find less evidence of direct discrimination in
the process of earnings attainment. Although immigrants achieved lower rates of return to technical or vocational training
than natives, their wage returns to experience, hours worked, years since migration, and academic high school were greater,

We use data from the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS) conducted in 1998 by the Korean Labor Institute to examine the school-to-work transition across three labor market entry cohorts of Korean men and women. Taking into account the dramatic expansion of educational system and economic changes Korean society has experienced during the last few decades, we develop hypotheses about possible changes in the effects of educational qualifications on first occupational attainment. We first conduct an OLS regression of first occupational prestige scores on education. We then look at the effects of education on the odds of entering an occupational class using multinomial logit models. The results of the two analyses indicate that educational qualifications strongly affect occupational attainment for both men and women. The effects of education, particularly junior college and university, on first occupation have declined across three labor market cohorts for women but not for men. 相似文献

对保险业的规模经济作出有效分析是摆在我们面前的现实问题,对此国内外学者都进行了有益的探索。我们通过采用定性及定量的分析方法,进而采取全要素生产率测算方法对深圳保险业规模经济进行研究,结果表明,深圳保险业存在规模不经济、狭义技术进步贡献低、全要素贡献不显著等问题。因此建议保监会要力争完善政策;决策部门应积极推进混业经营,促进保险公司间的合作;社会应加强保险人员的培养等,以实现保险业的规模经济。 相似文献
