In Sections 49 and 50 of the Design of Experiments, Fisher discusses an experiment designed to compare the effects of several types of manure on yield. Each type of manure is applied at three dosage levels: zero, single, and double doses. Fisher points out that the usual contrasts constructed for a factorial experiment are unsatisfactory in this setting. In particular, since the response curves necessarily meet at the zero dose, the usual notion of interaction as a lack of parallelism cannot apply. Fisher then gives an appropriate definition for interaction in this setting. We derive a class of higher-order kernels for estimation of densities and their derivatives, which can be viewed as an extension of the second-order Gaussian kernel. These kernels have some attractive properties such as smoothness, manageable convolution formulae, and Fourier transforms. One important application is the higher-order extension of exact calculations of the mean integrated squared error. The proposed kernels also have the advantage of simplifying computations of common window-width selection algorithms such as least-squares cross-validation. Efficiency calculations indicate that the Gaussian-based kernels perform almost as well as the optimal polynomial kernels when die order of the derivative being estimated is low. 相似文献

Grouped data are commonly encountered in applications. All data from a continuous population are grouped due to rounding of the individual observations. The Bernstein polynomial model is proposed as an approximate model in this paper for estimating a univariate density function based on grouped data. The coefficients of the Bernstein polynomial, as the mixture proportions of beta distributions, can be estimated using an EM algorithm. The optimal degree of the Bernstein polynomial can be determined using a change-point estimation method. The rate of convergence of the proposed density estimate to the true density is proved to be almost parametric by an acceptance–rejection argument used for generating random numbers. The proposed method is compared with some existing methods in a simulation study and is applied to the Chicken Embryo Data. 相似文献

This paper presents a generalization of the partition of the chi-squared statistic presented in Beh & Davy (1998). For a three-way contingency table with one or two sets of ordered categories, the chi-squared statistic partition is defined using orthogonal polynomials. Using this partition, information about the relationship between the variables can be obtained by identifying important associations in terms of the location (linear), dispersion (quadratic) and higher order components. The transformed chi-square family includes many common one-parameter continuous distributions. In that family, we give conditions under which a given function of the mean admits a minimum variance unbiased estimator and an orthogonal expansion for this estimator in terms of the generalized Laguerre polynomials. Spectral decomposition of the transition density of such a Markov process is presented in terms of a finite number of discrete eigenfunctions (Bessel polynomials) and eigenfunctions related to a continuous part of the spectrum of the negative infinitesimal generator of reciprocal gamma diffusion. Simple and multiple correspondence analysis for ordinal-scale variables using orthogonal polynomials
Correspondence analysis (CA) has gained a reputation for being a very useful statistical technique for determining the nature of association between two or more categorical variables. For simple and multiple CA, the singular value decomposition (SVD) is the primary tool used and allows the user to construct a low-dimensional space to visualize this association. As an alternative to SVD, one may consider the bivariate moment decomposition (BMD), a method of decomposition that involves using orthogonal polynomials to reflect the structure of ordered categorical responses. Foam models, especially random tessellations, are powerful tools to study the relations between the geometric structure of foams and their physical properties. In this paper, we propose the use of random Laguerre tessellations, weighted versions of the well-known Voronoi tessellations, as models for the microstructure of foams. Based on geometric characteristics estimated from a tomographic image of a closed-cell polymer foam, we fit a Laguerre tessellation model to the material. It is shown that this model allows for a better fit of the geometric structure of the foam than some classical Voronoi tessellation models. 相似文献
