Sample size determinations when two binomial proportions are very small

Sample size determination for testing the hypothesis of equality of proportions with a specified type I and type I1 error probabilitiesis of ten based on normal approximation to the binomial distribution. When the proportionsinvolved are very small, the exact distribution of the test statistic may not follow the assumed distribution. Consequently, the sample size determined by the test statistic may not result in the sespecifiederror probabilities. In this paper the author proposes a square root formula and compares it with several existing sample size approximation methods. It is found that with small proportion (p≦.01) the squar eroot formula provides the closest approximation to the exact sample sizes which attain a specified type I and type II error probabilities. Thes quare root formula is simple inform and has the advantage that equal differencesare equally detectable.     

Analysing exponential family based messy data

Recently exponential family based random effects models have received considerable attention. These models usually arise from an unobservable random process added to the independent exponential family models. An unobservable correlated process, however, would cause correlations among the exponential family based data. This paper, first, develops an asymptotically optimal test for testing the appropriateness of a fixed effects model for the exponential family based independent data versus a random effects model for the exponential family based independent or correlated data. The paper, then, provides a general framework on regression analysis for the exponential family based data generated under the random effects models.     

Rethinking the Univariate Approach to Panel Unit Root Testing: Using Covariates to Resolve the Incidental Trend Problem

In an influential article, Hansen showed that covariate augmentation can lead to substantial power gains when compared to univariate tests. In this article, we ask if this result extends also to the panel data context? The answer turns out to be yes, which is maybe not that surprising. What is surprising, however, is the extent of the power gain, which is shown to more than outweigh the well-known power loss in the presence of incidental trends. That is, the covariates have an order effect on the neighborhood around unity for which local asymptotic power is negligible.
