On the estimates of the parameters of the first order autoregressive process

Two methods of estimation for the parameters of an AR(1) process which are based on a non-linear least-squares approach are presented. On the basis of some simulation results they are compared with two maximum likelihood estimates and their relative merits are discussed.

A general review is given of statistical methods for nonlinear regression situations and some associated problems are mentioned. After general preliminary comments, a number of types of nonlinear model are outlined. Their parameterization is then examined. Analysis of residuals, with some emphasis on nonlinear models, is then considered and finally transformations of response and explanatory variable are discussed.     

Lower percentage points of hartley's extremal quotient statistic and their applications

Consider K(>2) independent populations π₁,..,π _k such that observations obtained from π _k are independent and normally distributed with unknown mean µ _i and unknown variance θ _i i = 1,…,k. In this paper, we provide lower percentage points of Hartley's extremal quotient statistic for testing an interval hypothesisH ₀ θ _[k] θ _[k] > δ vs. H _a : θ _[k] θ _[1] ≤ δ , where δ ≥ 1 is a predetermined constant and θ _[k](θ _[1]) is the max (min) of the θ_i,…,θ _k . The least favorable configuration (LFC) for the test under H ₀ is determined in order to obtain the lower percentage points. These percentage points can also be used to construct an upper confidence bound for θ_[k]/θ_[1].

Double samble tests— a distribution free procedure

A method for constructing two-stage (double samble) tests is presented which does not require the evaluation of complicated bivariate distribution function. The procedure results from a modification of Fisher's method for combining independent tests of significance and is distribution free in the way it combines the test results from the two sampies. However, the one sample test statistics for the two samples are assumed to have continuous distributions and may be parametric. A rule is also given or the selection of a particular test out of a family of possible two-stage tests which can be generated by this method. Specific examples are given and comparisons are made with two double sample tests which have previously been presented in the literature.

Estimation of variance components in the mixed effects models: A comparison between analysis of variance and spectral decomposition

The mixed effects models with two variance components are often used to analyze longitudinal data. For these models, we compare two approaches to estimating the variance components, the analysis of variance approach and the spectral decomposition approach. We establish a necessary and sufficient condition for the two approaches to yield identical estimates, and some sufficient conditions for the superiority of one approach over the other, under the mean squared error criterion. Applications of the methods to circular models and longitudinal data are discussed. Furthermore, simulation results indicate that better estimates of variance components do not necessarily imply higher power of the tests or shorter confidence intervals.
