Checking for errors in calculations and software: Dimensional balance and conformance of units

Although there has always been a general awareness that mathematical expressions must make dimensional sense in terms of the units involved, it is very easy to make simple mistakes in quantitative work that result in profound and potentially dangerous errors. Such errors are ubiquitous in modern research, as can be seen by reviewing government publications where dimensional errors persist despite peer and public review. Software methods have recently become available for checking calculations, equations, algorithms and programs for dimensional soundness. Correctness depends on conformance at two levels: balance of dimensions and agreement among units. Error at either level can now be detected automatically by software. Disagreement among units can even be automatically corrected by software procedures. These software tools can be used to check for errors in calculations and software source code in a way that is similar to using a spelling or grammar checker for text.

After-effects of working at visual display units

Two experiments were carried out to examine the acute and chronic after-effects of working with VDUs on subsequent subjective mood and performance efficiency. Both showed that working at a VDU has a negative after-effect on the user's subjective well-being but only if that person has a high level of cognitive failure. There was no evidence of any such effect on measures of performance efficiency.

挪用公款归个人使用在本质上是指国家工作人员基于个人意志,为了个人目的和个人利益而非法支配公款。这里的“个人”是指作为挪用人的国家工作人员本人,而不是指实际使用公款的人。实际使用公款的人可以是个人,也可以是单位。因职务内容的不同,国家工作人员构成挪用公款归个人使用的情形也不同。在一定条件下,挪用公款归个人使用的行为也会附着在单位行为身上伴随单位行为而发生,但不能因此认为单位行为也会构成挪用公款罪。     

Specialist police units and the joint investigation of child abuse

The last ten years have witnessed a significant shift in the police response to investigations of child abuse. One of the most ‘visible’ manifestations of this shift has been the establishment of specialist units where children can be interviewed, medical examinations conducted and, in some cases, overnight accommodation made available to children and their non-abusive carers. The history of these units in Scotland is summarized in this article, together with a brief outline of their remit and some of the current issues facing them. A closer examination of the way in which Scottish units have responded to the issue of joint child abuse investigations with social workers is made, drawing on evidence from research conducted in Scotland.

福州市新型农村合作医疗制度下就诊行为实证分析

以Grossman模型为理论模型,采用Probit模型、Multi—Logit模型等计量方法对福州市所辖闽清、连江、闽侯等6个县农户参加新型农村合作医疗（简称“新农合”）制度中的就诊行为、就诊单位的选择、就诊的医疗费用负担及影响因素进行实证研究,得出以下结论：（1）农户家庭社会经济特征因素影响农民的就诊选择;文化程度、健康情况、负担系数、收入水平、家庭规模等因素影响较显著,而性别、年龄以及是否党员、是否村干部等因素影响较不显著。（2）到就诊单位的距离影响了农户对就诊单住的选择。（3）“新农合”制度对减轻农民负担有积极影响。建议,应当尽量提升报销比例,降低报销起付线,尽可能简化与农民相关的制度安排;要合理利用合作医疗基金。制定适宜的门诊和住院补偿方案等。
