This article focuses on the distribution of price sensitivity across consumers. We employ a random-coefficient logit model in which brand-specific intercepts and price-slope coefficients are allowed to vary across households. The model is estimated with panel data for two product categories. The implications of the estimated model are deduced through an optimal retail pricing analysis that combines the panel data with chain-level cost figures. We test parametric distributional assumptions using semiparametric density estimates based on series expansions.  相似文献

This article introduces a new model for transaction prices in the presence of market microstructure noise in order to study the properties of the price process on two different time scales, namely, transaction time where prices are sampled with every transaction and tick time where prices are sampled with every price change. Both sampling schemes have been used in the literature on realized variance, but a formal investigation into their properties has been lacking. Our empirical and theoretical results indicate that the return dynamics in transaction time are very different from those in tick time and the choice of sampling scheme can therefore have an important impact on the properties of realized variance. For RV we find that tick time sampling is superior to transaction time sampling in terms of mean-squared-error, especially when the level of noise, number of ticks, or the arrival frequency of efficient price moves is low. Importantly, we show that while the microstructure noise may appear close to IID in transaction time, in tick time it is highly dependent. As a result, bias correction procedures that rely on the noise being independent, can fail in tick time and are better implemented in transaction time.  相似文献

The literature on testing for the presence of Rosenberg's (1973) return to normalcy random coefficient model is well developed with both Shively (1988) and Brooks (1993) advocating the use of point optimal tests. This paper explores the robustness of point optimal testing for the Rosenberg alternative to two departures: the special case HildrethHouck (1968) alternative and non-normality in regression disturbances, finding the point optimal testing approach to be fairly robust to both departures.  相似文献

In this article, we present the problem of selecting a good stochastic system with high probability and minimum total simulation cost when the number of alternatives is very large. We propose a sequential approach that starts with the Ordinal Optimization procedure to select a subset that overlaps with the set of the actual best m% systems with high probability. Then we use Optimal Computing Budget Allocation to allocate the available computing budget in a way that maximizes the Probability of Correct Selection. This is followed by a Subset Selection procedure to get a smaller subset that contains the best system among the subset that is selected before. Finally, the Indifference-Zone procedure is used to select the best system among the survivors in the previous stage. The numerical test involved with all these procedures shows the results for selecting a good stochastic system with high probability and a minimum number of simulation samples, when the number of alternatives is large. The results also show that the proposed approach is able to identify a good system in a very short simulation time.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article presents a reliable method for highlighting a defective stage within a manufacturing process when the existence of a failure is only known at the end of the process. It was developed in the context of integrated circuit manufacturing, where low costs and high yields are indispensable if the manufacturer is to be competitive. Change detection methods were used to point out the defective stage. Two methods were compared and the best chosen. Thanks to this approach, it was possible to solve some yield problems for which the engineers' investigations were far from the real cause of failure. However, there is a strong requirement to assess the reliability of the suspicions cast on the incriminated stage, otherwise engineers could be made to do useless work and time could be wasted looking into events that are not the true cause of failure. Two complementary tools were implemented for this reliability assessment and their efficiency is illustrated by several examples.  相似文献

We provide a method for finding the optimal double sampling plan for estimating the mean value of a continuous outcome. It is assumed that the fallible and true outcome data are related by a multivariate linear regression model where only some of the explanatory variables are sampled. Conditions under which double sampling is preferred over standard sampling plans are determined. An application of the method to a well-known data set on air pollution is presented.  相似文献

A global measure of biomarker effectiveness is the Youden index, the maximum difference between sensitivity, the probability of correctly classifying diseased individuals, and 1-specificity, the probability of incorrectly classifying healthy individuals. The cut-point leading to the index is the optimal cut-point when equal weight is given to sensitivity and specificity. Using the delta method, we present approaches for estimating confidence intervals for the Youden index and corresponding optimal cut-point for normally distributed biomarkers and also those following gamma distributions. We also provide confidence intervals using various bootstrapping methods. A comparison of interval width and coverage probability is conducted through simulation over a variety of parametric situations. Confidence intervals via delta method are shown to have both closer to nominal coverage and shorter interval widths than confidence intervals from the bootstrapping methods.  相似文献

Group testing has its origin in the identification of syphilis in the U.S. army during World War II. Much of the theoretical framework of group testing was developed starting in the late 1950s, with continued work into the 1990s. Recently, with the advent of new laboratory and genetic technologies, there has been an increasing interest in group testing designs for cost saving purposes. In this article, we compare different nested designs, including Dorfman, Sterrett and an optimal nested procedure obtained through dynamic programming. To elucidate these comparisons, we develop closed-form expressions for the optimal Sterrett procedure and provide a concise review of the prior literature for other commonly used procedures. We consider designs where the prevalence of disease is known as well as investigate the robustness of these procedures, when it is incorrectly assumed. This article provides a technical presentation that will be of interest to researchers as well as from a pedagogical perspective. Supplementary material for this article is available online.  相似文献
